Modern feminism, founded by an English writer Mary Wollstonecraft during the days of the Enlightenment has maintained its influence until today. Wollstonecraft asserted that women should also have equal rights as men in all aspects including the economic, political and social. So what is feminism? Feminism is a belief in the achievement of women’s rights equivalent to men’s, in the economic, political and social arenas which is expressed through political theories, political movements and moral philosophies.
As this concept and the number of its advocates prospered, anti-feminists have arisen with arguments criticizing that feminism is no longer relevant in today’s modern society. They state that feminists have no more battle to fight since they have already achieved many rights, and that feminism itself is becoming more and more counteractive to the whole concept of ‘equal rights’ in today’s society. However, these criticisms fall short. There remain so many more women’s issues to resolve, and the motive of feminism is not to discriminate men to create inequality but to raise the rights of women to the same level of men’s.
Victories of gaining voting rights, the right to perform abortion, right to equal wage, sexual equality engraved into the law. These are only some of the work that feminists have achieved. Looking at these achievements, anti-feminists have been arguing, now that even sexual equality is enshrined in the law, there is no more work ...
