1981 Albrektsson 등은 인공치근과 주위의 골조직이 이상적으로 결합하기 위해서는 6가지의 요소가 있다고 하였다. 1) biocompatibility, 2) design, 3) surface quality, 4) status of host tissue, 5) surgical tecnnique, 6) loading condition 이 필요하다고 하였다. 이중에 처음의 3부분은 모든 학자들이 공통으로 관계되는 부분이며 특히 surface quality 와 연관하여 몇몇 학자들은 micro m까지의 surface roughness를 강조하였다.
