데이터마이닝에 특정 작업에 적용하는 기법이 정해진 것은 아니고 하나의 기법만으로는 모든 문제를 해결할 수 있는 것도 아니다. 데이터마이닝 기법의 선택은 데이터마이닝이 수행하는 작업과 목적, 분석에 이용되는 데이터의 특성, 발견된 패턴의 설명력, 사용의 용이성 등에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 그러나 몇 개의 데이터마이닝 시스템을 결합함으로 개별 시스템이 가지는 한계를 극복할 수 있는데 이를 하이브리드 시스템이라고 한다.

1.1 하이브리드 시스템의 분류
하이브리드 시스템은 오래 전부터 인공지능 분야에서 연구되어 왔고 Goonatilake et al은 하이브리드 시스템을 기능 대체 시스템(Function Replacing Systems), 상호 통신 시스템(Inter Communication Systems), 다형 시스템(Polymorphic Systems) 등 세가지 유형으로 분류하였다[GK95].
기능 대체 시스템은 한 기법의 단점을 그 단점에 강한 다른 기법을 이용함으로 극복하려는 시스템이다. 예를 들어 퍼지 시스템(Fuzzy System)은 학습력이 약한데 이를 하이브리드 뉴로-퍼지 시스템(Hybrid Neuro-Fuzzy System)을 이용해 극복할 수 있다.
상호 통신 시스템은 하위 작업의 복합성으로 인한 복잡성 때문에 하나의 기법만으로 문제를 해결할 수 없는 경우에 사용된다.
다형 시스템은 하나의 아키텍처 안의 다중 정보 프로세싱 능력을 표현하기 위해 개선시킨 시스템으로 Symbolic 프로세싱에 신경망을 이용하는 방법이 이에 속한다.
하이브리드 데이터마이닝 시스템은 목적의 복합성 설명, 기존 시스템의 기능 강화, 수행능력 개선, Robustness 증가, 바이어스 감소 등에 이용될 수 있다. 그러나 지금까지의 분류는 기능 대체 시스템과 다형 시스템 사이의 구분이 모호하다.
Anand et al은 데이터마이닝을 위한 하이브리드 시스템을 Loosely-coupled 시스템과 Tightly-coupled 시스템으로 분류하였다[AH98].
Loosely-coupled 시스템은 적용 작업의 복합성으로 인한 문제의 복잡성 해결을 위해 필요하거나 작업의 수행 능력을 개선하기 위해 필요한 다수의 기법으로 구성된다. 데이터마이닝 과정이 서로 다른 두 개 이상의 작업을 필요로 할 경우 Loosely-coupled 시스템의 요소는 이러한 작업을 병렬적, 혹은 순차적으로 수행한다. Loosely-coupled 시스템은 Goonatilake et al의 상호 통신 시스템과 동일하다.
