바닷물의 온도는 이미 산업혁명 이전보다 1도가 올랐다. 이는 히로시마에 떨어진 핵폭탄 2,800만 개가 바다에서 동시에 떨어진 것과 같은 에너지가 필요하다는 것이다. 산업혁명 이후 인간은 1.5톤에 이르는 이산화탄소를 배출하였다. 현재 매년 약 400톤의 CO2가 대기로 배출된다. 이는 50년 전에 비해 거의 3배에 가까운 수치이며, 점점 상승하고 있다.

우리는 환경 문제를 어떻게 바라보고 대처해야 할까? 여러 관점에서 기후 위기를 살펴보겠다.

말레이시아에서 포착한 환경 문제
지난 학기 말레이시아에서 교환학생으로 생명과학과에서 수학하며 기후 위기를 또 다른 시선에서 바라볼 수 있었다. 기후 위기에 대해 진지하게 찾아보고 고민해 본 것도 말레이시아에 간 후였다. 말레이시아의 독특한 열대 환경을 공부하며 생태와 기후의 가치를 체감했다. 또한 기후변화를 실제로 느껴보기도 했다.

우리나라와 달리 동남아시아에서는 산불을 제압할 인프라가 마땅치 않고, 산불이 발생하면 환경 자원의 소실과 생태계 파괴 피해가 크다. 특히 올해 발생한 인도네시아의 산불은 유례없이 큰 규모였다. 7월에 발발한 산불은 2달이 넘는 기간 동안 계속되었고, 내가 거주했던 말레이시아에도 심한 대기오염을 겪었다. 산불 연기는 대기에서 화학 반응으로 유독성을 띠어 눈과 목, 기관지 통증으로 고생했던 기억이 있다. 동남아지역에서 산불은 자주 일어날 수 있고, 이에 대한 대책 또한 있을 텐데 산불이 이렇게 악화한 이유를 찾아보았다. 50년 만에 찾아온 최악의 가뭄은 바로 엘리뇨 현상 때문이다.
해안의 비정상적인 온도 상승이 가뭄과 이상고온으로 불길을 확산시켰다.
