- 사회적 배경
산업화된 사회에서 현대인은 만성적인 영양과잉에 있다.
이로 인하여 비만, 당뇨, 심혈관질환 등 다양한 대사와 관련된 질환들이 증가하였다.
만성질환들을 치유하는 첫 번째 방법은 과잉 섭취된 칼로리를 제거하는 것이 된다.
최근 간헐적 단식, 저탄고지, 케톤식 등 다양한 식이요법이 인기를 끌고 있는 것은 과잉칼로리 섭취를 감소시키는 것이 주요원인이다.

- 단식의 공복감과 요요현상
단식은 공복감으로 인하여 장기간 하기 쉽지 않다.
