Chapter 9. Late Modern English (1800-Present)
◎ The National Varieties of English
- The inner circle of English (Australia, Canada, etc.); the outer circle (Fiji, Philippines, Hong Kong, etc.); and the expanding circle
- The two major national varieties of English: British English and American English
- British English has enjoyed greater prestige for a long time, but the baton of influence was passed to the United States by the middle of the 20th century
- Conservatism and Innovation in American English
American English is more conservative than British English (ex. pronunciation of r, retention of gotten), but it has lost certain features as well (i.e. mostly vocabulary items; fortnight, copse, fen, etc.)
American English has adopted new compounds like backwoods and underbrush
◎ National Differences in Word Choice
- Despite the differences, many American locutions are well understood and used in Britain (ex. automobile-car, postman, railway)
- There are many genuine instances of differences, but most of them do not cause any serious confusion on either side (ex. coach-bus; first floor-second floor; mental-insane)
- American Infiltration of the British Word Stock
British English has been infiltrated by American usage, especially vocabulary (i.e. Americanism: OK, cafeteria, cocktail, egghead, etc.)
