Introduction
During 1920s, the U.S. government prohibited the production, sale, and purchase of alcohol, which was known as the Prohibition Era. The use of prohibition cannot suppress the citizen to drink alcohol, but promoted the citizen to drink alcohol illegally. As an outcome of the prohibition, Mafia smuggled liquor from Mexico and Canada governing the states of boarders with Mexico such as Chicago, where homicide and political corruption were rampant. Even worse, the illegally produced alcohol disturbed the health of citizens who drink it. The low-grade liquor from unverified factories often contained methanol which resemble the chemical structure of ethanol, the main substance of normal liquor, but can damage fertility, optic nerves, and central nerves, leading to death in severe cases. Therefore, the prohibition was abandoned because of its critical side-effects.
