Paige, a24-year-old, primigravid client, at 39 weeks' gestation, has come to the labor suite wittl
complaints of labor. She tells the nurse she felt the baby o'drop" over the last two (2) weeks, and there have been
contractions for the past two (2) hours. There is no report of any leakage of fluid from the vagin 4 and she does
not think her membranes have ruptured. Paige states, "My contractions are coming every 15 minutes and lasing
about 30 seconds. The contactions do not change when I walk or lie. I think I saw some bloody show, but I'm
not sure. Do you think my labor has started?"
1. What signs of tue labor does Paige have?

On exam the nurse determines Paige's conffactions are moderate in shength. Vital signs are within
defined limits, and the fetal heart rate baseline is 135. On initial cervical exam Paige is dilated 2 cm and 50Yo
effaced. In one (l) hour the nurse finds the cervix is 2-3 and 80%. The frequency of contractions is unchanged
but lasting 45-50 seconds. There is confirmation the membranes are intact.
What stage and phase of labor do these findings indicate?
The nurse documents the foltowin g:2,80%io, cephalic presentation, and -2. What do these mean?

During the late phase of pregnancy, women often have a period of false labor called Braxton Hicks contraction which they can assume to be the onset of labor mostly among primigravid women. The false labor tends to soften and efface the cervix hence can be confused with the onset of true labor (Hatfield, 2013). Although it may be difficult for women to differentiate between false labor and true labor several signs can be used to determine the kind of labor.
