While English is a language in which voicing contrasts of consonants occur in every part including prefix, root, and suffix, Korean is a language that do not show any contrast of consonants (i.e., Dinnsen and Eckman, 1975). In that sense, Korean is thought to be unique in having three kinds of voiceless stops; fortis or tense /p* t* k*/, and lenis or lax /p t k/ and aspirated /ph, th, kh/ (i.e., Mi-Ryoung Kim and San Duanmu, 2004; Lisker & Abramson, 1964). Considering the different contrast between English and Korea, several studies have shown that Korean English learners have difficulty in perceiving and pronouncing English (i.e., Kim, 2005; Kang and Lee, 2001).
This can also be supported by a theory of L1 influences on L2 speech. A number of studies have explored L1 influences on L2 speech in terms of VOT production, and the results revealed that L2 learners’ ability did not completely match those of native English speakers. (i.e., Flege, Munro & Skelton, 1992; Flege, McCutcheon & Smith, 1987).
