What is a monopoly? The focus of this essay is to answer that very question and will use the Microsoft monopoly trials as case examples. The report will also examine relative Federal laws, its consequences, the nature of Microsoft, and finally practical resolutions. According to the Webster’s Dictionary a monopoly is "The exclusive control of a commodity or service in a given market."1
There are 2 predominate models in a monopoly. The first one is a “pure monopoly” which "there is only one supplier of a product for which there are no close substitutes, and in which it is very hard for another firm to coexist."2 Second model is a “natural monopoly” where "advantages of large-scale production make it possible for a single firm to produce the entire output of the market at lower average cost than a number of firms each producing a smaller quantity."3
