According to the National Center for Health Statistics, in 2007, over half of all deaths in the United States were caused by heart disease, cancer, stroke, and chronic lower respiratory disease (Heron et al., 2009). Many of these diseases have genetic components and by changing the genetic makeup of individuals, through gene therapy, these diseases might be cured or prevented (Lewis, 2009). Gene therapy is the introduction of new genes to defective cells to treat or prevent diseases (Lewis, 2009).Some people believe that gene therapy is dangerous and that its potential has been overestimated. As a result, these critics are against any funding for gene therapy. However, in fact, gene therapy has great potential to cure various diseases and provides new treatment methods for incurable diseases. Therefore, the United States government must increase funding for gene therapy because with more money for gene therapy research, scientists and medical doctors may identify new methods of treatment for various diseases.
