Duality makes double outcomes
Recently, I have been learning about Freud in a counseling psychology course. I used to hear about duality in British and American literature in film courses and this allowed me to understand its concept from Freud’s theory. He tells us about the human personality structure. Human personality structure is operated by Id, Ego, Superego. Freud thinks that the human body is an energy system and its personality is decided by three(Id, Ego,Superego) elements. According to his instinct theory, instinctis classified as Libido and Thanatos, so duality is such that some parts of personality gets out of control and functions independently. In short, a human’s Ego’ cannot control himself or herself and either ‘Id’ or ‘Superego’ has more power than the other one. I thought that

Finally people may be curious as to why duplicity is important and how does it influence other elements like characters or texts. In some texts, some characters’ influence on other characters cause them to display traits of duplicity. At the beginning of ‘Amadeus’, Salieri does not hate Mozart although he decides to kill him. His generous disposition is changed due to hatred and jealousy of Mozart’s genius and achievements as well as his vulgar teasings. In this manner, Salieri becomes the dualistic character. In ‘Lord of the Flies’, Jack and Roger’s group lose their rationality because of the situation they are in where they on an uninhabited island with shortages of food. Anderton who is the protagonist in ‘Minority Report’ also becomes a double-sided character after his daughter was kidnapped. Due to his daughter’s disappearance, he turns to drugs and as a result, the commissioner of Precrime commits crime with a dualistic disposition.
