1. Describe the nature and causes of the problem faced by Sweeney

Electronic Applications Corporation is a major producer of silicon chips for the computer industry. However, human resource policies are weak compared with company growth. HR have not been a high priority. The problems are like these. There is high turnover among electrical engineers who work in research and development(30% per year). And many of the engineers felt dead-ended in the technical aspects of engineering. (problems associated with career development). These problems are caused because the company did not have a formal exit interview system so that they couldn’t know the mechanism. Also, R&D supervisor doesn’t want to allow his better people to move up in the organization and doesn’t want to orient and train new people.

5. Should the career development activities be integrated with other human resource management activities? If yes, which ones? Why?
Since the career development is not apart from rest of the processes in management, it should be integrated and intertwined with other activities. The very first activity related to it is performance appraisal. By identifying and evaluating an employee’s performance, customized career development can be in effect. Also performance management should be also considered to be engaged in career development in that it has sheer influence on management decisions and policies. The last activity that should be integrated is compensation. Compensation process is thought to be the last part and understandably encourage employee motivation so that the positive synergy cycle works.
