상담은 상담자와 내담자간의 의사소통을 기반으로 내담자가 직면하고 있는 심리적 문제를 해결할 수 있도록 필요한 도움을 제공하는 전문적 서비스이다. 나아가서 상담은 내담자가 직면하고 있는 즉시적 문제의 해결뿐만 아니라, 계속되는 삶의 여러 문제들을 합리적으로 대처할 수 있는 기본적 능력을 가질 수 있도록 하는 데 궁극적 목적을 갖는다 (정원식, 박성수, 김창대, 1999). 성공적인 상담 결과를 위해서는 상담자는 내담자와 인간적, 전문적 관계를 형성해야 하고, 이를 위해서는 인성적 자질뿐만 아니라 상담이론 및 기법에 대한 전문적 지식을 가지고 있어야 한다 (유성경, 1999).

다양한 학습장애 정의들이 학습장애아동의 교육권을 대변하는 많은 단체들에 의해 자신들의 입장을 강조하는 측면에서 제시되어왔다 (Mercer, 1991). 본 글에서는 다양한 학습장애에 대한 정의 가운데 학습장애 전문가 집단에게 가장 타당한 것으로 받아들여지고 있는 미국 교육부의 1977년 정의를 소개하고자 한다.
