Since drugs are discovered about 5000 years ago, there have been many enduring controversies in terms of its therapeutic value and harm (Koch). It is a fact that narcotics have been used for medical use and it is also historically true that drugs have been treated as social evil. Proponents argue that marijuana has been used as a medicine for long times and it is sole alternative treatment that does not cause side effects which most of modern medicines have (Koch). The supporters also claim that current drug policy violates people’s right of choice in terms of medical treatment (Koch). Conversely, opponents maintain that any scientific proof of marijuana for medical use has not been proved (Koch). For making right choice, we need to seriously consider about its effectiveness as a medicine, social impacts able to happen, potential problems caused by. In my opinion, medical use of marijuana should not be legalized because marijuana has not been proved its therapeutic effects as a medicine, legalization of marijuana cannot solve the current drug problem, and marijuana is harmful for human’s health.
First and most obviously, legalization of marijuana for medical use should be banned because its medical value has not been proved. The evaluation is the most important criteria to be admitted as a medicine. According to the federal government, marijuana is currently categorized in Schedule I and “a high potential for abuse”, and “no currently accepted” treatments such as LSD and heroin for medical use are grouped in the same class (Koch).
