The Femme Fatale in Art and Baroque Painting
A femme fatale is defined as a woman of great seductive and irresistible charm who leads men into dangerous situations. This iconic figure has existed throughout history, both in mythology and religion, as having the potential to destroy men. She makes one of her “earliest and most profound appearances” in Biblical myth, including Eve, Delilah, Salome and Judith. “The Femme Fatale Throughout History.” History Television, CanWest Broadcasting.

An illustrative painting of the biblical story of Samson and Delilah, Samson and Delilah, c. 1610, painted by the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is displayed at Cincinnati Art Museum. The painting at the museum is a modello, a detailed preparatory sketch at a smaller scale for a larger work of art. The finished piece (1.85 x 2.05 m), is exhibited in the National Gallery, London.
