People can learn new knowledge by participating in everyday activities and experiencing many ceremonies in our life. We also learn by reading books, magazines and newspapers, watching television and movies, web surfing in internet and by simply listening to other people’s story or experiences (Mead, 2003, cited in Matauranga Maori book of reading).
‘Matauranga Maori’ refers to past, present and developing Maori knowledge. Matauranga Maori is a subject that includes variety and wide range of subject that we are familiar with and learn in world today. For example, astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, language, education, history, and more are included in Matauranga Maori (Mead, 2003, cited in Matauranga Maori book of reading).
In Maori traditional schools, the learning was religious in nature and there were rituals in all pursuit of learning to observe. The role of teacher was not ordinary or common. It was important to gain knowledge from emphasizing the events with rituals. Therefore, religion and education was closely related (Mead, 2003, cited in Matauranga Maori book of reading).
Additionally, In the Maori context, the relationship between teacher and student is intimated by high expectations from each other that lead to more leaning and working together on a set task. When the student prove that he or she has gained the skill, knowledge and the understanding to do the task by him or herself, then both the teacher and the student are set to move on and start on a new task (Rose, 1982, cited in Matauranga Maori book of reading).
Teachers also refers to the history while teaching by story telling, therefore students also have a chance to know about their ancestors. This would lead to the student being able to reflect to someone for psychological and spiritual support (Rose, 1982, cited in Matauranga Maori book of reading).
