Purpose This study aims to examine the impact of two types of trust (cognitive and emotional trust) toward platform algorithms on gig workers' algorithm affordance and continuance of algorithm, which may lead to algorithm dependence.


Design/methodology/approach Based upon previous studies, the study tried to develop a research model. In order to test the model, this study collected survey data from 207 food delivery riders by conducting the survey three times. This study also conducted both measurement and structural model test by using the PLS (partial least squares) technique.


Findings The findings reveal that cognitive trust significantly impacts both algorithm affordance and continuance usage, while emotional trust only affects algorithm affordance, does not influence continuance usage. The result also identifies that algorithm affordance affects continuance usage and algorithm dependence, whereas continuance usage does not impact the algorithm dependence. Based on the results, this research sheds light on the psychological and behavioral impacts of platform algorithms on gig-workers, offering valuable insights for platform companies seeking to optimize user experience.
