스마트폰과 대중문화 현상의 문화유전자 인식 (Current Phenomena of Smartphone and Pop-Culture and the Recognition of Meme)

초록

현실 한국문화는 디지털문화와 대중문화가 국제사회에서 압도적 우위를 차지하고 있다. 대중문화는 K-pop으로 세계를 석권하고, 디지털문화는 스마트폰 판매와 사용에서 모두 국제적 비교 우위를 차지하고 있다. 대중문화와 함께 스마트폰 한류가 세계를 석권하고 있는 셈이다. 이러한 최근의 두 문화적 현상은 제법 갑작스러운 현상이어서 그 원인이 쉽게 포착되지 않는다. 이러한 문화 현상을 포착하는 숨은 인자로서 문화유전자를 설정한다. 지금 대중문화가 한류를 이루고 스마트폰 문화가 세계적으로 앞선 것은 민족문화의 전통 속에 갈무리된 문화유전자에서 비롯되었다. 문화유전자는 선천적으로 타고난 것과 후천적으로 만들어진 것으로 나누어 분석한다.
선천적인 문화유전자는 고대문화에서 민족적 특성을 찾고 해명한다. 제천행사의 국중대회 풍속을 기록한 내용에서 ‘남녀노소’ ‘군취가무’의 열쇠말을 문화유전자로 포착하여 대중문화 현상을 해명한다. 스마트폰 문화의 특성은 농경문화의 전통 속에서 문화유전자를 찾는다. 농경문화는 한 공간에 머물면서 다양한 씨를 뿌려 토지를 변화시키고, 휴대용 가구를 사용하여 필요할 때마다 방의 기능을 변화시켜 이용하는 것이다. 스마트폰에 다양한 앱을 깔아 도깨비방망이처럼 다양하게 활용하는 것은 농경문화적 발상이다.
후천적 문화유전자는 컴퓨터와 휴대폰의 보급에 익숙한 20대에서 주로 나타난다. 한국에는 트위터나 페이스북 이전에 싸이월드의 미니홈피 서비스가 세계 최초로 이루어졌다. 자기 일상을 사진으로 찍어 올리는 문화가 싸이월드에서부터 비롯되었다. 스마트폰이 널리 보급되고 카카오톡이 웹서비스를 하면서 그러한 일은 더 속도감을 내게 되었다. 20대의 스마트폰 보급률은 세계 최고이다. 이제 스마트폰은 필수 휴대품이 되었다. 스마트폰이 없으면 불안하고 친구들로부터 소외된다. 사람들이 스마트폰을 편리하게 사용하는 것 같은데, 사실은 스마트폰이 사람들을 부린다. 그러므로 사람들이 스마트폰에 종속되어 가는 불편한 진실을 성찰하고 극복하는 대안문화 구상이 긴요하다.

영어초록

Current Korean culture is dominated by digital culture and pop-culture in an international society. K-pop is conquering a global pop-culture market and Korean smartphones enjoy an international comparative advantage. That is, both Korean pop-culture and Korean smartphones is conquering the world. It is not easily understood why these phenomena happen, because those happened suddenly. I suggest the notion of meme as a hidden factor through which these phenomena can be explained. That is, I argue that these phenomena are derived from our meme that is deeply situated in our tradition. I analyze this meme in the distinction between the innate one and acquired one.
Searching for our national characteristics in our ancient cultures, I reveal the contents of the innate meme. By capturing ‘people of all ages and of either sex’ and ‘singing and dancing together’ observed in records about customs of dynastic grand conventions of offering rituals to heaven as key words for the meme, I explain the phenomenon of Korean pop-culture. I situate current characteristics of smartphone culture within our tradition of agricultural culture. Agricultural culture has characteristics that people settle in a place and transform lands by sowing seeds; they also transform functions of rooms by using portable furniture. To use smartphones for diverse uses like a magic wand by installing various applications in those can be explained by the characteristics of agricultural culture.
The acquired meme is mainly found among people in their twenties who are accustomed to the spread of computers and mobile phones. Before Twitter or Facebook, the Mini Hompi service of Cyworld appeared. The culture in which people post their everyday life in the form of image was begun from Cyworld. As smartphones widely spread and Kakao Talk launched its web service, this phenomenon was accelerated. The penetration rate of smartphone among twenties in Korea is the first all over the world. Now smartphone becomes an indispensable thing. If a person does not have smartphone, he or she becomes upset and become alienated from friends. Though superficially people seem to use smartphones conveniently, they are dominated by smartphones. Thus, it is urgent to reflect the problems of the smartphone culture and to consider the possibility of alternative to this smartphone phenomenon.
