상해판 『독립신문』 연재소설 「피눈물」에 나타난 3·1운동 형상화와 그 의미 (Perception and Meaning of March 1st Movement Presented in the Shanghai Version of “Tongnip Sinmun” Newspaper -Focused on the Analysis of the Serial Novel ‘Tears of blood’-)

초록

3·1운동 이후 중국 상하이는 한국 독립운동의 중심지로 부상하였다. 당시 중국 상하이 지역 한국인 사회의 여론 형성에 커다란 영향력을 행사했던 매체는 단연 상해판 『독립신문』이었다. 상해판 『독립신문』은 초창기 임시정부를 주도하던 안창호 계열 인사들이 창간한 매체였다. 따라서 상해판 『독립신문』은 임시정부 내 안창호 계열이 상하이 한국인 사회에서 자신들에게 유리한 여론을 조성하고자 창간한 것으로 볼 수 있다.
본 논문은 상해판 『독립신문』에 게재된 연재소설 「피눈물」을 통해 해당 소설의 작가 및 당대 상하이 지역 안창호 계열 인사를 위시한 대한민국임시정부의 3·1운동 인식을 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 먼저 소설 「피눈물」의 연재 양상과 서사의 특성에 대해 먼저 살펴보았다. 소설 연재 방식과 또 서사 전개에서 구사된 여러 문학적 기법, 그리고 소설의 내용적 측면을 분석함으로서 본 논문은 소설 「피눈물」의 작가가 대한민국임시정부 내 안창호 계열 인사일 가능성이 높다는 것을 규명하였다.
이어서 본 논문은 소설 「피눈물」에 나타난 3·1운동 인식을 분석하였다. 소설 「피눈물」은 3·1운동의 여러 양상 가운데 유독 1919년 3월 5일 ‘학생단 시위’를 모티브로 하고 있었다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 작가가 3·1운동 당시 학생들의 움직임에 강한 인상을 받았다는 것을 밝혔다. 그리고 소설 「피눈물」에 나타난 시위의 궁극적 목적은 일본 관헌의 야만적인 시위 탄압 행위를 전세계에 알려 한국의 독립을 쟁취한다는, 다분히 외교론적 독립론에 기반한 것이었다. 이는 작가가 3·1운동의 의의를 한국 독립에 유리한 외교적 환경을 조성하는 데 있었다는 것을 중요하게 생각했다는 것을 방증하는 것이었다. 마지막으로 본 논문은 소설 「피눈물」은 여학생의 죽음을 중요하게 조명하며 프랑스의 잔 다르크 이미지를 오버랩시키고 있었던 이유를 규명하고자 하였다. 이는 작가가 3·1운동을 통해 독립운동에 있어서 여성의 존재를 자각하였으며 또 여성의 죽음은 단순한 삶의 종말이 아닌 한국의 독립이라는, 신생과 개조를 예고하는 이미지를 부각시키기 위한 것이었다.
끝으로 본 논문은 소설 「피눈물」의 3·1운동 인식이 비단 작가 개인의 것이 아닌 상해판 『독립신문』을 위시한 초창기 대한민국임시정부를 관류하는 3·1운동 인식에 기반한 것이었다는 것을 밝히고자 했다. 소설 「피눈물」이 연재를 시작할 무렵 대한민국임시정부는 안창호를 중심으로 ‘제2회 독립시위운동’을 준비하고 있었다. ‘제2회 독립시위운동’ 당시 대한민국임시정부의 의도가 온전히 관철된 시위는 평양 시위였다. 대한민국임시정부는 ‘제2회 독립시위운동’을 3·1운동과 유사하게 전개시켜나가고자 했다. 평양 시위의 전개 양상은 소설 「피눈물」의 내용과 상당히 겹쳤다. 이는 소설 「피눈물」에 나타난 3·1운동 인식이 초창기 대한민국임시정부를 관류하던 3·1운동 인식에 기반한 것임을 방증한다.

영어초록

Since the March 1st Movement, Shanghai has emerged as the center of the Korean independence movement. The Shanghai version of “Tongnip Sinmun” Newspaper(상해판 『독립신문』) had a great influence on the formation of public opinion of Korean society in Shanghai, China at that time. The Shanghai version of “Tongnip Sinmun” was a medium created by members of the Ahn Changho group who led the early interim government. Therefore, the Shanghai version of “Tongnip Sinmun” can be considered as the foundation of the creation of favorable public opinion of Korean society in Shanghai in the provisional government by the members of the Ahn Changho group.
This study was conducted to identify the perception of the March 1st Movement of the Korean provisional government, which respected members of the Ahn Changho group, through the serial novel ‘Tears of blood’(「피눈물」) published as the Shanghai version “Tongnip Sinmun”. The series aspect and characteristics of the narrative of ‘Tears of blood’ were examined for this purpose. By analyzing the series aspect, various literary techniques used in narrative development, and the contents of novels, this paper has revealed that the writer of the novel ‘Tears of blood’ is likely to be one of members of the Ahn Changho group in the Korean provisional government.
In addition, this paper analyzed the perception of the March 1st Movement presented in the novel ‘Tears of blood’. The novel ‘Tears of blood’ used the ‘student’s protest’ on March 5, 1919, among the various aspects of the March 1st Movement, as a motif. Through this, this paper revealed that the writer was impressed by the movement of students during the March 1st Movement. Also, the ultimate goal of the protest in the novel ‘Tears of blood’ was based on the diplomatic independence theory to seek the independence of Korea by informing the world about the brutal crackdown against protests by the Japanese authorities. This was circumstantial evidence to prove that the writer considered the March 1st Movement’s significance in creating a favorable diplomatic environment for Korean independence. Lastly, this paper intended to clarify the reason why the novel ‘Tears of blood’ juxtaposed the image of the French heroine Joan of Arc with an emphasis on the death of the female student. This meant that the writer was aware of the existence of women in the independence movement through the March 1st Movement, and to emphasize that the death of the women was not simply the end of her life, but an image of the regeneration and metamorphosis of Korea into an independent Korea.
Lastly, this paper intended to reveal that perception of the March 1st Movement in in the Shanghai version “Tongnip Sinmun” of the novel ‘Tears of blood’ was based on the perception of the early Korean provisional government rather than personal perception. At the beginning of the publication of ‘Tears of blood’, the Korean provisional government was preparing for the ‘2nd independence protest’ centered on Ahn Changho. At the time of the ‘2nd independence protest’, the Pyongyang protest was the one that carried the intention of the Korean provisional government. The Korean provisional government sought to implement the ‘2nd independence protest’ as similar to the March 1st Movement. The development aspect of the Pyongyang protest overlapped the contents of the novel ‘Tears of blood’. This provides the circumstantial evidence that the perception of March 1st Movement in the novel ‘Tears of blood’ is based on the perception that was implemented in the early period of the Korean provisional government.
