초록

낭만주의와 역사학파 그리고 역사주의의 연결고리는 ‘삶’으로 이해되는 ‘역사’이다. 여기서 역사는 계몽이 주창하고 헤겔이 계승한 ‘이성’(자유)과 진보와 같은 철학적 개념의 틀로 체계화할 수 없는 것으로 이해된다. ‘역사학파의 아들’로서 베버 사상의 많은 부분에서 확인되는 바와 같이 계몽과 헤겔철학에 대한 그의 부정적 자세는, 그의 사상의 원천이본질적으로 철학에 대한 거부와 역사의 우위를 정당화한 역사주의와 역사학파에 있다는 것을 말해준다. 전체적으로 그의 사상에는, 철학에 대한 역사의 반발과 철학을 포섭한 역사라는 두 계기가 내재하는 바, 역사주의와 역사학파의 제 분파들, 즉 역사주의 법학, 역사주의 경제학, 역사주의 역사학이 베버 사상의 원천이자 자양분이 된다. 그는 한편에서는 헤르더, 자비그니, 랑케, 드로이젠, 딜타이, 슈몰러, 빈델반트, 리케르트 등의 사상적 전통에 서서 그리고 다른 한편에서는 이 전통과 싸우면서 낭만주의의 비합리성을 청산하고 합리주의적 학자로서 자신의 정체성과 ‘개성’을 형성시킨다. 또한 베버는 역사를 정치의 문제로 포착하고 있다는 점에서 역사학파의 전통을 따르지만, 이 전통을 지배하던 보수주의와는 다른 시대적·정치적 요구를 관철시키려 했던 역동적 정치인이자 정치사상가로서 자신의 정체성을 완성시킨다. 그럼에도 정치인 베버는 학자 베버와는 달리 역사학파와 역사주의의 전통에 내재된 낭만주의의 비합리적인 계기와 완전히 단절되지 않은 모습을 보인다.

영어초록

The link of romanticism, the historical school and historicism (Historismus) is neither ‘reason’ (freedom) nor progress advocated by the Enlightenment and inherited by Hegel, but ‘history’ (understood as life) that cannot be systematized within philosophical concepts. Weber calls himself as a ‘son of historical school’. As confirmed in many parts of the fountain of his thought, his negative attitude towards the Enlightenment and Hegel’s philosophy tells us that his thought is essentially characterized by the rejection of philosophy and the primacy of history, which historicism (Historismus) and historical school justify. Two moments are thus inherent in his thought: resistance of history to philosophy on the one hand and philosophy subsumed by history on the other hand. Thus, historicism (Historismus) and the branches of the historical school in a special sense, that is, historicist jurisprudence, historicist economics, and historicist historiography, are the source and nourishment of Weber’s thought. In this way, Weber, as a ‘son of the historical school’, stands in the tradition of Herder, Savigny, Ranke, Droysen, Dilthey, Schmoller, Windelband, Rickert etc. He fights, however, against it on the other hand, eliminating the irrationality romanticism. Through this, he forms his identity and ‘unique personality’ as a rationalistic scholar. At the same time, Weber forms his identity and ‘unique personality’ as an active politician and political thinker, following the tradition of the historical school and historicism (Historismus) in that he grasps history as a question of politics: He tries to fulfill the demands of politics of the time which are different from the conservatism that dominated this tradition. Unlike scholar-Weber, however, politician-Weber cannot completely disconnect from the irrational momentum of romanticism inherent in the tradition of the historical school and historicism (Historismus).
