The position of Buddhism on the saṃgha-bheda event caused by Devadatta is that it was a treason on the basis of thoroughly religious view point. The saṃgha-bheda of Devadatta is an internal situation of a religion, Buddhism. Therefore, the religious decision on it should be naturally respected. But, it should be considered that it was a historical fact as well. So, it can also have its own validity to review the event on the extended line of Buddhist history.
In Buddhist history, there have been a lot of conflicts between the progressive and the conservative with the change of time and subjects. Perhaps, the dialectical progress of such conflicts may be rightly called as the real Buddhist history. Therefore, the comprehension of Devadatta‘s saṃgha-bheda event in that extended line may have a sufficient validity for deepening our understanding on the saṃgha-bheda.
If the saṃgha-bheda of Devadatta had not been against Buddha himself, the position of Devadatta must have been first dealt with in the view point of Buddhist history before it was religiously condemned. However, as the saṃgha-bheda of Devadatta was committed against Buddha, it is very difficult to guarantee the objectivity in the problem. At any rate, the academic approach should be able to establish a view point distinguished from the religious approach. Therefore, as an academic examination, this approach to Devadatta in the historical view point of Buddhist order can be said to have a sufficient justifiability in extracting a valid solution for that problem.
This consideration was raised from a historical view point of Buddhist order that the saṃgha-bheda of Devadatta could be understood in the extended line of conflicts between the progressive and the conservative. This consideration can have a validity in that it can be estimated as an alternative solution in understanding the saṃgha-bheda to the religious view point as the logic of treason that contrasts Devadatta against Buddha and prefers an emotional judgment on him. That is, in comprehending the saṃgha-bheda, we can search more profound approach to it through the historical understanding of order as well as the traditional religious view point that sees the saṃgha-bheda as a treason.
