프랑스혁명기 지롱드파와 산악파에 대한 연구는 두 당파의 투쟁이 정점에 이른 시기 즉 루이 16세의 재판이 시작된 1792년 말부터 지롱드파가 정치무대에서 사라진 1793년 6월까지에 집중된다. 이 논문은 검토시기를 확장하고, 삼부회가 소집된 1789년 여름부터 국민공회가 개원한 1792년 가을까지 두 당파의 형성과정에 주목한다. 지롱드파의 주요 인물들은 혁명 초기 파리 코뮌회의에서 함께 활동을 시작하여 줄곧 정치경험을 공유한 후 입법의회에 진출했다. 반면 산악파의 주요 인물들은 자코뱅클럽에서 반전파로 두각을 나타낸 후 파리 봉기코뮌에서의 활동을 토대로 국민공회에 진출했다. 입법의회의 지롱드파는 식민지 문제와 전쟁에 대한 의회 안팎의 논쟁을 통해 강력한 당파를 형성하고 지롱드파 내각을 조직하는데 성공했다. 반면 산악파는 국민공회 개원 후 연맹군과 9월학살의 책임을 둘러싼 지롱드파와의 논쟁에서 당파로서의 정체성을 형성했다. 전쟁에 관한 논쟁에서 서로의 애국심과 정직성을 의심하며 회복할 수 없는 적대감을 갖게 된 두 당파는 9월학살의 책임에 대한 논쟁에서 상대를 전례 없는 유혈폭력의 공모자로 공격하거나 그에 맞서 그 폭력을 혁명 수호를 위한 민중봉기로 정당화함으로써 당파의 결속을 강화하고 어느 한편의 소멸로 종결될 혁명기 가장 격렬한 당파투쟁을 예비했다.

영어초록

The Study of the Girondins and the Montagnards primarily focuses on the period that marks the peak of their political struggles, beginning at the end of 1792, when the trial of King Louis XVI began, to June of 1793, when the Girondins essentially disappeared from the political stage. This paper expands the length of the period commonly considered, and examines formation of the two political factions beginning in the summer of 1789, at the convocation of the Estates General, up to autumn of 1792 which saw the opening of the National Convention. Leading Girondins initiated collaborated activities at the Assembly of the Representatives of Paris Commune and continued to align their political experiences leading up to their entrance into the Legislative Assembly. Conversely, promonent Montagnards distinguished themselves as opponents of the war, and entered the National Convention boosted by the activities in the Insurrectional Commune. The Girondins in the Legislative Assembly formed a strong political faction through disputes over the colonial question and over the war within and without the Assembly; they succeeded in organizing a ministry composed of their partisans. On the other hand, the Montagnards strengthened their factional identity through their opposition with the Girondins regarding ‘the army of 83 departments’ as well as attribution of responsibility for the September Massacres that immediately followed the opening of the National Convention. The two political factions had become irreparably hostile to the other, casting doubt on the other party’s patriotism and probity in disputes over the war; they strengthened their own party unity and prepared for the Revolution’s fiercest factional strife through disputes over responsibility of the September Massacres in which the Girondins blamed the opposing party for plotting unprecedented bloodshed and the Montagnards justified the violence by equating it with popular risings which had saved the Revolution.
