트랜스/포스트휴머니즘의 사이보그 담론에 대한 신학적 성찰: ‘탈-신체화’에서 ‘재-신체화’로의 전회를 지향하며 (Theological Reflections on Cyborg Discourse of Trans/Posthumanism: Toward a Shift from ‘De-embodiment’ to ‘Re-embodiment’)

초록

사이보그(cyborg)는 첨단과학기술시대의 새로운 존재론이자 인간학으로 대두되었다. 흔히 대중매체나 소설 등을 통해 사이보그는 인간과 기계가 결합된 혼합적 존재를 지칭하는 것으로 이해되고 있다. 하지만 사이보그에 대한 제각기 다른 다양한 관점들이 있을 뿐만 아니라, 관점들 중 일부는 양립 불가능할 정도로 완전히 다른 의미로 사이보그를 전유하고 있기도 하며, 대립적으로 대비되는 양상을 보이기도 한다. 하지만 흥미롭게도 공통적으로 사이보그 담론은 첨단과학기술시대의 명과 암을 드러내는 동시에, 우리가 전통적으로 정의해왔던 ‘인간’이라는 개념을 해체하고 있다. 대표적인 양상으로 트랜스휴머니즘(Transhumanism)과 포스트휴머니즘(Posthumanism)의 사이보그 담론이 그러하다. 트랜스휴머니즘은 첨단과학기술을 신봉하는 다양한 계층들이 주도하는 일련의 사상적 운동으로, 이들은 인간을 ‘탈-신체화(de-embodiment)’와 ‘탈-사이보그(de-cyborg)’를 이룩함에 따라 컴퓨터에 정신을 업로드하고 불사를 쟁취한 ‘포스트휴먼(posthuman)’이 되어가는 과도기적 단계로서 ‘트랜스휴먼(trans-human)’, 곧 ‘사이보그’로 규정한다. 따라서 트랜스휴머니즘에게 있어서 사이보그는 과학기술의 진보 과정에서 등장하는 중간적 단계로 설정된다. 하지만 트랜스휴머니즘이 근대의 계몽주의를 계승하며 과학기술에 대한 낙관적인 이해를 피력하는 것과 반대로, 포스트휴머니즘은 4차 산업혁명 내지는 첨단과학기술시대의 이면이라 할 수 있는 ‘인류세(anthropocene)’에 요청되는 새로운 인간 주체를 사이보그로서의 ‘포스트-휴먼(post-human)’으로 내세운다. 이들은 현재의 기후위기와 난민, 빈부의 격차, 그리고 인종·여성차별 등과 같은 지구적 문제들이 과학기술문명을 추동했던 ‘근대성’에 의해 파생된 것으로 이해한다. 이들에게 있어서 근대적 인간 개념을 극복하는 ‘탈-인간’적 주체인 포스트휴먼은 ‘몸’을 매개하여 동물과 기계와 자연과 상호공속적이며 상호공생적으로 살아가는 관계적 존재로 이해된다. 본 논문은 포스트휴머니즘의 사이보그가 지닌 특징들은 지속적인 ‘재-신체화(re-embodiment)’와 ‘재-사이보그(re-cyborg)’로 규정하고, 이에 사이보그라는 용어가 긍정적으로 혹은 부정적으로 전유되는 것과 상관없이, 포스트휴머니즘의 사이보그 담론이 과학기술시대 내지는 인류세 시대에 요청되는 새로운 인간론과 주체론의 가능성을 시사하고 있다는 점에 주목한다. 나아가 생태-신학적 인간학이 함의하고 있는 관계적이며 생태적인 인간 이해가 트랜스휴머니즘의 사이보그 인간론을 비판하는 동시에 포스트휴머니즘의 사이보그 담론의 생태적인 측면을 수용할 수 있는 측면들이 있음을 밝히고, 마지막으로 포스트휴머니즘의 사이보그 인간론이 약화시키는 인간의 독특성과 고유성을 신학적 인간학에 근거하여 충분히 탈-인간중심적인 방식으로 재구성할 수 있음을 제시하고자 한다.

영어초록

Cyborg has emerged as a new ontology and anthropology in the era of advanced science and technology. Cyborg is commonly understood through media and novels to refer to a mixed being that combines humans and machines. However, there are many different perspectives on cyborgs, and some of these perspectives accept cyborgs in a completely different sense, and perspectives are contrasted in opposition. However, interestingly, in common, the cyborg discourse reveals the light and dark sides of the era of advanced science and technology, while simultaneously dismantling the concept of ‘human’ as we have traditionally defined it. Representative examples include the cyborg discourse of transhumanism and posthumanism. Transhumanism is an ideological movement led by various classes of people who believe in cutting-edge science and technology. They define current humans as ‘transhumans’, or ‘cyborgs’, as a transitional stage of becoming ‘posthumans’. Posthumans are futuristic humans who upload their minds to computers and become immortal by achieving ‘de-embodiment’ and ‘de-cyborg’. Therefore, in transhumanism, cyborgs are set as an intermediate stage that appears in the process of technological advancement. However, contrary to transhumanism, which inherits modern enlightenment and expresses an optimistic understanding of science and technology, posthumanism proposes ‘post-human’, or cyborg, as the new human subject required in the ‘anthropocene’, which can be said to be the other side of the fourth industrial revolution-the era of advanced science and technology. They understand that global problems such as the current climate crisis, refugee issues, the gap between rich and poor, and discrimination against women are derived from the ‘modernity’ that drove scientific and technological civilization. For them, the posthuman, who overcomes the modern concept of human, is understood as a relational being who lives in a mutual and symbiotic way with animals, machines, and nature through the medium of ‘body’. Therefore, regardless of whether the term cyborg is appropriated positively or negatively, I note that the cyborg discourse of posthumanism suggests the possibility of a new anthropology required in the era of science and technology or the Anthropocene. Furthermore, I explain that the relational and ecological human understanding implied by in eco-theological anthropology has aspects that can criticize the cyborg discourse of transhumanism and at the same time accommodate the ecological aspects of the cyborg discourse of posthumanism. Lastly, I would like to suggest that the uniqueness and distinctiveness of humans, which is weakened by posthumanism’s cyborg humanism, can be reconstructed in a sufficiently post-anthropocentric way based on eco-theological anthropology.
