초록

이 연구는 과학기술사회 여성들의 정체성 형성과정에 대한 탐색을 통하여, 한 집단 내 소수자들의 사회구조적 위치의 특성과 그로 인해 경험되는 정체성 형성과정의 독특성, 그리고 그 독특성의 사회적 의미에 대하여 논의한다. 사회심리학자들은 정체성 형성의 과정은 스스로의 위치를 찾기 위한 범주화 과정이라 보는데, 이 범주화 과정에는 필연적으로 권력관계에 대한 성찰이 따른다. 보다 긍정적인 자아개념을 확보해줄 집단으로 자신을 범주화하려는 개인의 노력과 그 과정에서 경험되는 독특한 감정의 긴장 상태(Deflection)는 탈정치화된 정체성 형성의 전략을 이끌어낸다. 이 감정적 긴장이 새로운 정체성 구축과 조직 문화의 변화를 유도할 수 있다는 주장들과는 달리, 이 연구에서 여성과학기술인들의 감정적 어긋남/굴절의 경험은 탈정치화된 정체성 구성전략, 즉 ‘여성’을 배제한 과학기술인 정체성 추구 전략을 야기하였다. 정치 세력화가 가능할 수 있는 ‘여성’을 버림으로써, 여성과학기술인들은 보다 더 ‘과학기술인다운’ 성공에 몰입할 수 있었다. 가장 정치적일 수 있는 정체성의 한 측면을 배제하고 추구한 성공의 전략들은 집단 내 구성원으로서의 정당성 확보와 심리적 안정감을 획득하게 하였지만, 그 집단 구성원들 간 권력관계와 권력관계를 통한 종속적관계를 계속 유지시키는 역할을 하기도 한다. 모순적이게도, 과학기술인으로서 더욱 성공적일수록 ‘여성’과학기술인으로서의 위치는 더욱더 주변화되며, 이는 결과적으로 여성을 과학기술사회에서 주변인으로 만들었던 사회구조적 관계를 재생산하는 데 기여하게 된다.

영어초록

This study explores women’s social psychological experiences in identity construction process in science and engineering arena. Symbolic interactionists and social cognition theorists have provided underpinnings of identity construction process at individual level. Social cognition theorists demonstrate how we process information of identity by producing schemas and categorizing people including self. Symbolic interactionists examine the structure of identity and the identity making process through transmitting meanings attached to social behaviors in specific societal arenas. Woman scientists and engineers experience the scientist or engineer identity based on their ambivalent status of the scientist community. By conceptualizing themselves as different women from other women and by perceiving gender content messages from peer group members, woman scientists categorize themselves on the border of two incompatible worlds. This particular status produces cognitive dissonance of self, ambivalent feelings of situation they face, and ‘deflection.’ Deflection, as an outcome of women’s identity recognition process, indicates the conflict between femininity which should be suppressed and scientist identity to be desired. Some social psychologists discuss struggles over identities and politically motivated identity work based on the perception of self status in social structure. Interestingly, women scientists investigate ‘depoliticized’ ways of identity construction. They construct scientist identity and pursue the social recognition by excluding one part of self, ‘woman,’ or ‘femininity.’ Women scientists deny or abandon a politically strategic dimension to the use of identities in collective action. For women, the depoliticizing identity construction strategy is considered as the most effective means of being successful in science and engineering arena, but, ironically, the more successful they are, the more entrenched they become in the dependent relationships of the social structure.
