초록

이 글은 한국유교의 위상과 역할을 탈식민주의의 관점에서 조망하고, 한국유교가 갖는 착종된 근대성과 은폐된 식민성을 철학적으로 탐구할 목적으로 기획되었다. 월터 미뇰로가 주장하듯이 식민성 없는 근대성이란 존재하지 않으며, 유교적 식민성은 한국적 근대성을 구성하는 요소이다.
이 글에서 다루는 한국유교의 범위는 식민지 유교로부터 현재에 이르는 시기까지이다. 이 시기는 식민체제와 분단체제를 경험한 세대의 학술사상뿐만 아니라 정치적 태도와 긴밀하게 연결되어 있다. 특히 식민체제와 해방 공간에서 생산된 다양한 유교 이론과 담론들은 매우 미묘하게 연결되어 있어 복잡한 양상을 띠고 있다. 한국유교와 더불어 이 글에서 다루는 또 하나의 핵심 개념은 식민지 근대성이다. 식민지 근대성의 문제는 정치적 의식만이 아니라 심리적이고 정서적인 요인과도 결부되어 있고, 관계의 역학에서 비롯한 사회적 감성과도 연결된다.
우리시대 한국유교는 갑오경장 이전과 이후의 반식민시기를 거쳐 식민시대에 이른 동일하면서도 다른 조선유교에 연원을 두고 있다. 근대라는 기호 속에 ‘이질적 동일성’을 띠는 한국유교의 중층성은 그래서 명쾌하게 분절하기가 쉽지 않다. 19세기 말 이전과 이후의 한국유교는 연속성을 갖고 있으면서도 단절의 양상이 나타나는데, 연속과 단절의 접점에서 식민지 근대성과 이에 저항하는 반근대성의 두 조류가 한국유학의 내부에서 경쟁하고 있다. 동체의 이질성이 갖는 긴장감은 한국유교를 기반으로 전개된 한국근대사의 가면이기도 하다.
이 글의 핵심 논지는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조선유교는 일제 식민지배자들에 의해 주리/주기의 도식으로 재해석되었다기 보다는 지배체제 구축을 위한 ‘해체’의 과정이었다. 둘째, 조선유교의 해체를 통한 재구성의 도달점은 일본불교로의 대체였고, 그 연장선에 이식된 황도유학이 위치한다. 셋째, 한국유교의 식민성은 조선유학의 해체와 식민적 재구축 담론 과정에서 만들어진 유령을 탈각하지 못하고 현재에 이르고 있다.
여전히 일제 식민 지배기에 만들어진 주리/주기에 의한 조선유교의 해체담론과 이식된 황도유학의 잔재는 은밀하지만 강력하게 현대 한국유교의 헤게모니로 작동하고 있다. 한국유교의 착종된 근대성을 다루고 있는 이 글은 한국인의 감성과 정체성 재발견을 위한 일련의 탐구 과정이다.

영어초록

This article is intended to study the significance and role of Korean Confucianism from the perspective of decolonization and analyze the entangled modernity and hidden colonialism philosophically. As Walter Mignolo claimed, there is no modernity without colonialism, and accordingly Confucian colonialism is an essential part of Korean modernity.
The "Korean" in the term "Korean Confucianism" in this paper covers the one from the Japanese colonial rule to the present. The period had a great influence on academical trends and political tendencies of Koreans during the colonial period and the division of Korea into north and south. In particular, different Confucian theories and discourses established during the colony and the liberation from Japan are connected with each other, and are complicated in their nature. This paper is also covering an issue, that is, colonial modernity. The topic is related not only to a political sense, but also to psychic and emotional senses, and social emotions created from relationship with others. We need to consider the dynamics of social relationships in that the colonial modernity developed from conflicts between the colonizing and the colonized.
This article presupposes "Our negative perceptions of Korean Confucianism originated from the modern period, and is related to the colonial modernity." The origin of contemporary Korean Confucianism is founded on two dissimilar bases. Confucian ideas before and after the 19th century are connected with each other, but are disconnected from each other at the same time. Their relationship causes two different aspects of Confucianism, that is, colonial modernity and anti-modernity, which are conflicting with each other in the contemporary Korean Confucianism.
The colonial modernity took different forms, acceptance and resistance, betrayal and silence, cooperation and struggle in the colonial modern Korean period when the modernity and the tradition conflicted with each other. Therefore, it is hard to clarify various aspects of Korean Confucianism, which contains dissimilar elements in its modern nature. Tension caused by its dissimilar aspects is a mask of modern Korean history hidden Korean Confucianism. It is not the fact that the Joseon Confucianism was not reinterpreted by the Japanese colonizer in the frame of the li-centered or qi-centered theory. Rather, the colonizer did deconstruct the Joseon Confucianism for the purpose of establishing the foundation for their ruling. Their purpose of the reconstruction is to replace the Joseon Confucianism with Japanese Buddhism, and the imperial Confucianism was implanted as part of the project. The colonialism of the Korean Confucianism is the outcome of the colonial deconstruction and reconstruction. The remnants of the deconstruction of the Joseon Confucianism and the implanted imperial Confucianism focusing on the li-centered and qi-centered theories are holing the covert but strong hegemony in Korean Confucianism. In the end, this paper tries to study the entangled modernity of Korean Confucianism, and as a result find the identity of Korean people in a way.
