영화 「영원한 제국」의 건축 서사 연구 -전통건축의 판과 칸에 대한 영화적 해석을 중심으로- (A study on the architectural narrative of the film 「Eternal Empire」 - Focusing on conceptual interpretation of traditional architectural plans -)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 유리 로트만에 의하면 도상적 기호와 조건적 기호의 세계는 영원한 상호작용, 즉 부단한 상호 이행과 배척의 과정 속에 존재한다. 역사극은 전통건축의 도상에 내재된 조건성의 브리콜라주를 통해 영화적 현실세계를 구축한다. 본 연구는 영화의 심층분석 과정을 통해 전통건축기호와 영화서사의 이중 언어적 관계를 파악하는 것과 영상서사의 질료로서 건축의 역할을 연구하는 것에 목적이 있다. (연구방법) 먼저 과학적 분석과 인문학적 해석의 접목을 통해 박종원 감독의 영화 「영원한 제국」을 분석한다. 서사 및 건축기호에 대한 통합적 결과를 토대로 인문학적 해석을 시도하는 연구방법으로 영상서사의 재료로서 조선시대 전통건축을 고찰하는 것을 시작으로 그레마스의 기호분석틀을 사용해 전통건축의 기호해석을 위한 대면적 비교분석을 진행한다. 이는 예술로서 건축의 조건성과 도상성간 대립과 이행 그리고 서사와의 결합이 만들어내는 긴장의 행로를 따라 영화예술의 심층의미에 접근하는 합리적인 방법론이다. (결과) 영화 「영원한 제국」의 서사는 강력한 왕권을 기초로 백성중심의 나라를 꿈꾸는 정조의 좌절을 그리는 표층의미를 담고 있으며 심층의미로는 공간과 서사의 직조(織造)를 통해 파악되는 유교 이데올로기의 모순(矛盾)이다. 또한 두 진영의 대립을 묘사하는 공간의 형태와 질료의 이중성은 영화의 서사와 결합하며 복합적 감흥을 생성한다. 본 연구의 건축기호 해석은 전통건축의 판과 칸에 기반하므로 영화에서 진영 대립을 표현하는 프레임 이미지와 건축기호로서 ‘판’과 ‘칸’에 대한 복합적 해석을 통해 영화 「영원한 제국」서사에 대한 심층적 의미를 분석했다. (결론) 본고는 영화의 미장센으로 표현된 전통건축의 칸과 판의 개념으로부터 생성되는 서사성에 주목하고 건축의 이중언어적 특성이 서사적 재배열을 통해 어떤 역할을 수행하는지를 고찰하는 것에 의미를 갖는다. 또한 향후 전통건축에 담긴 관념성과 서사와의 상호작용에 대한 연구의 진행을 통해 사극의 창작과 영상미술에 대한 비평작업에 다소나마 기여하길 희망한다.

영어초록

(Research background and purpose) According to Yuri Rotman, the world of iconic signs and conventional signs exists in eternal interaction, that is, in the process of constant mutual transition and rejection. Historical dramas build a cinematic real world through the bricolage of conventionality inherent in the iconography of traditional architecture. The purpose of this study is to understand the dual linguistic relationship between traditional architectural symbols and film narrative through an in-depth analysis process of the film and to study the role of architecture as a material of film narrative. ​(Research Method) First, the film 「Eternal Empire」, directed by Park Jong-won, is analyzed through a combination of scientific analysis and humanistic interpretation. This is a research method that attempts a humanistic interpretation based on the integrated results of narrative and architectural symbols. It begins with examining the traditional architecture of the Joseon Dynasty as a material for film narratives and uses Greimas' symbol analysis framework to provide a basis for interpreting the symbols of traditional architecture. Then, the area comparative analysis is conducted. This is a reasonable methodology to approach the deep meaning of film art along the path of tension created by the conflict and transition between the conventionality and iconicity of architecture as art and its combination with narrative. (Result) The narrative of the film "Eternal Empire" contains a superficial meaning depicting the frustration of King Jeongjo, who dreams of a people-centered country based on a strong royal authority, and in a deep sense, it is a contradiction of Confucian ideology that is grasped through the weaving of space and narrative. In addition, the duality of space and material depicting the confrontation between the two camps combines with the narrative of the film and creates a complex impression. Since the interpretation of architectural symbols in this study is based on the plates and compartments of traditional architecture, the in-depth meaning of the narrative of the film "Eternal Empire" was analyzed through a frame image expressing the confrontation of the camps in the film and a complex interpretation of "Pan" and "Kan" as architectural symbols. (Conclusion) The significance of this paper is to focus on the narrative created from the concepts of Khan and Pan in traditional architecture expressed in the mise-en-scène of film and to consider what role the bilingual nature of architecture plays through narrative rearrangement. In addition, it expects to contribute to the creation of historical dramas and criticism of video art through future research on the interaction between the conceptuality and narrative contained in traditional architecture.
