현대 장신구의 칠보기법 적용과 표현 가능성 (Application of Enameling on Modern Jewelry and Possibility of Expression)

초록

현대 장신구는 고전적 기법과 형태, 재료를 넘어서며 많은 것들을 표현하고 있다. 20세기 중반이 되자 귀금속과 보석을 위주로 한 보수적 장신구 분야에도 표현주의가 밀려들었는데, 장신구의 기능적 부분보다 내면의 표현을 앞세우기 시작했으며 전위적, 실험적 형태와 재료가 속속 등장했다. 현재까지 이러한 실험은 계속되고 있으며, 실용과 비실용 또는 공예와 예술의 범주를 넘나들며 그 논쟁을 계속 하고 있다.
서양에서는 에나멜, 국내에서는 파란이라 불리며 오래전부터 사용되었던 유약을 이용한 칠보기법은 고온에서 금속 표면에 유리질을 녹여 붙이는 방법이며, 내구성과 내수성이 높아 페인팅이나 착색에 비해 견고하다는 장점을 지닌다. 또한 귀금속 장신구에 보석과 같이 색을 표현하는 수단이 되며, 회화적이거나 조각적 표현을 가능하게 한다. 이는 자칫 단조로울 수 있는 금속의 색상에 다양한 색감으로 독특한 매력을 전달하게 한다. 이렇게 전통성을 지닌 칠보기법은 현대의 예술 장신구에 활용되어 칠보 특유의 회화적 표현, 색과 질감, 견고함과 같은 미적 특성을 극대화하며 현대 장신구의 표현기법으로서 그 역할을 다하고 있다.
따라서 이 논문은 오늘날 칠보기법이 장신구 조형에 현대적 요소를 줄 수 있다는 가정에서 출발했으며, 1950년대 이후 서양에서 시작된 현대 장신구의 흐름으로 현대성의 요소를 파악한 뒤, 이를 근거로 칠보를 사용한 예술 장신구의 창의적 표현과의 연관성을 파악하고자 했다.
이러한 연구를 위해 이 논문에서는 칠보기법을 활용한 예술 장신구 작가 작품들을 a) 회화적 표현 내용에 중점을 두었는지, b) 색채 효과로 장신구 형태를 강조하였는지, c) 촉감의 차이로 흥미를 줄 수 있는 질감 효과에 집중했는지에 따라 ‘회화적, 색감적, 재질적’ 이라는 총 세 가지로 구분하여 연구하였다.
그 결과 칠보를 사용한 현대 장신구는 첫째, 크기에 제한이 있는 장신구에 이야기의 집중된 서술이 가능하며 둘째, 색감 표현에서 거의 모든 색 표현과 음영, 투명도와 같은 세밀한 부분들이 용이했고, 셋째, 추상적이며 실험적 질감 표현이 뛰어났다. 결국 인류가 미적 목적을 위해 오랜 시간 칠보를 사용해 왔고, 현재까지 계속 사용하고 있음을 볼 때 현대적 감성을 표현할 수 있는 도구로써 칠보기법이 계속적으로 개발되고 활용되어야 할 것으로 본다.

영어초록

Modern jewelry is expressing a lot of things while going beyond the level of a classical technique, form and materials. With the coming of the middle of the 20th century, expressionism penetrated into even the field of conservative jewelry with focus on precious metals, and it began to make the expression of the inner side go ahead rather than the functional part of jewelry, causing avant garde, experimental forms and materials to appear one after the other. Even up to the present, such an experiment keeps going, and its related controversy also continues while passing through the categories between the practical and non-practical, crafts and art.
Enamel-using enameling, which has been used since long time ago while being called enamel in the West and Paran in Korea, is the technique of melting glass on metal surface using a kiln in high temperatures, assuming the merit of being more solid than painting or coloring because of its high durability and water resistance. In addition, this technique becomes a means of highlighting colors other than precious stones on jewelry and conveys its own unique charm to metallic colors, which could be almost monotonous, by making possible pictorial or sculptural expression. The enameling equipped with traditionality like this, with its use for contemporary art jewelry, is maximizing the aesthetic characteristics, such as picturesque expression, color & texture, and solidity specific to jewelry enamel, and performing its role as an expressive technique of creating contemporary jewelry.
Accordingly, this paper started from the belief that today's enameling could play a huge role in the modernization of jewelry; thus, first, this paper grasped the element of modernity through the flow of contemporary jewelry originating in the West, on the basis of which, did research on the role of enameling as the possibility for creative expression of contemporary art jewelry.
For this research purpose, this paper studied the authors of art jewelry and their works using enameling by dividing them into 'picturesque', 'color-based' and 'texture-based' aspects according as a) they focused on the contents for expression, b) they focused on the forms of jewelry using color effects and c) they focused on surface texture effects that can present fun of touch. As a result of doing research on this, first, this study found that it's possible to do a concentrated statement of a story on the jewelry having a limit to its size in contemporary jewelry using jewelry; second, it's possible to apply almost all colors to representation of color sense, and to achieve minute parts, such as a tone and clarity, etc; third, This study thinks that there sure exists the appropriateness of having to continuously develop and use the enameling that can express modern sensibility solidly after all, in a state where the excellence of enameling has been already acknowledged through the historical verification of materials.
