Ethiopia is one of the most populous countries in the continent of Africa. The total population of the country is over 110 million. More than 83 percent of the population now lives in rural areas, mainly agriculture-based. Oromia is one of the nine regions of Ethiopia with the largest population. At the end of 1994, the Microfinance Intuition of the Oromia Region was introduced. Since from its introduction, the Microfinance Institution has been accessible in all Oromia regions, including the West Guji Zone where the study was conducted.
Microfinance is an ideal instrument for alleviating poverty and improving the well-being of poor and low income community. Microfinance will also have a good potential to align and strengthen social cohesion and economic development. Microfinance enhances the living situations of disadvantaged and low-income community. Outreaching and spread of the accessibility of microfinance and its service, especially for the third world country are one means and tools in combatting poverty and backwardness. The effect of microfinance varies from state to state and also from urban to rural. But, for the effectiveness of microfinance, the commitment of the government at all levels, the mind setup of the clients (the beneficiary) has higher contribution. Therefore, this paper aims to assess the impact of microfinance institution on improving the livelihood of poor community as well as the future potential of implementation of microfinance in the West Guji region. The data collection methods used for this research were both quantitative and qualitative and data collection instruments such as interview, focus group discussion, observation, etc., were come to effect during the study. The primary data were collected through research techniques. During study, impact assessment was conducted based on the variables (the independent and dependent). The findings of the study shows that, microfinance has a positive effect on enhancing the well-being of the poor community who were engaged in the system for more than four years, especially when compared to that of the new clients.
