초록

The aim of this research is to explore effective strategies for translating movies from Korean into English and to analyze and examine how a subtitle translator can grasp and contain the meaning of the source texts in thinking over the discourse situation and the effects not to damage the intention of the original texts. To attain this end, this study compared the Korean actor's lines of Parasite directed by Bong Joon-ho with Darcy Paquet's English subtitles. Thus, the outstanding results of the analysis are sorted into three main categories: contextual situation, culture-specific items, wordplay(pun).
The audience of the target language expect to have the effect and feeling of the original movies. In order to preserve the original effect and feeling, the translator should try hard to avoid literal translation as well as to work hard to provide the TL readers with proper translations in which the intended meaning and the cultural specificity are enclosed in. Therefore, translators should possess the ability to contain discourse situation and aesthetic effects, much more correct understanding and critical thinking.
