플라톤이 서양 철학사에 끼친 영향은 기초적이고 다기적이나, 본고에서는 자체성과 철학적 최상급의 개념을 중심으로 살펴보며, 이들의 문제점을 진단하고, 대안적 사유법을 위한 단서를 제안한다.
서구 철학의 주축적인 사유틀이나 개념들의 원류가 되는 것이 플라톤의 ‘바로 그것, 그 자신에 즉해 있는 것(auto kath’ auto: itself by itself)’ 또는 간단히, ‘자체적인 것’이라는 개념이다. 이는 그가 형상을 규정하는 가장 대표적이며 고유한 표현으로, 자기 동일성, 불가환원성, 독립성, 실체성 등을 함의한다. 자체적인 것의 개념은 두어 단계의 추론을 거치면, 비트겐슈타인이 말한 바, ‘철학적 사실’, 또는 ‘철학적 최상급’의 개념을 형성하게 한다.
자체성이나 최상급의 개념은 이후 서양철학자들, 가령, 데칼트의 절대 확실성(인식적 최상급), 칸트의 정언명령이나 선의지(윤리적 최상급), 정치철학의 이상국, 논리실증주의의 이상 언어(언어적 최상급) 등의 개념 형성에 영향을 주며, 근현대의 인식론, 윤리학, 논리학 등에 지대한 영향력을 행사하였다.
본 논문에서는 이들 사유범주들의 문제점을 지적하고 검토한다. 이런 검토에서 비트겐슈타인, 소쉬르, 데이빗슨 등의 논의를 원용한다. 전면적 회의나 절대 확실성의 개념은 부조리하고, 철학적 사실 또는 최상급을 상정할 때, 규칙 준수의 역설에 봉착한다.

영어초록

Plato’s influences on Western philosophies are basic and manifold. This paper focuses on his concepts of ‘auto kath’ auto’ and philosophical superlatives. It further examines problems of these concepts and their history of influences on western philosophy, and suggests clues for alternative thinking.
It is Plato’s ‘auto kath’ auto(itself by itself)’ that is the source of the main reasoning and concepts of Western philosophers. This is the most representative and unique expression when Plato defines main features of his Form. This phrase implies self-identity, irreducibility, independence, and essence. This concept leads Plato to form what Wittgenstein mentions as ‘philosophical facts’ or ‘philosophical superlatives.’ The concept of superlative is the logical basis for central concepts of major Western philosophers, such as the absolute certainty of Descartes (epistemological superlative), Kant’s categorical imperative or good-will (ethical superlative), the ideal language of logical positivism (linguistic superlative). These concepts have exercised long-lasting influences on modern epistemology, ethics and logic.
This paper points out problems of these concepts, utilizing discussions of Wittgenstein, Saussure, and D. Davidson. The notion of absolute certainty or global skepticism is logically absurd, and assumming existence of philosophical facts leads us to face the rule following paradox. It is argued that the self-identical or superlative being such as universals or abstracts turns out to be private entities which cannot provide the objective foundation for meanings of language. Thus the concepts of self-identity and philosophical superlative, and thought-categories of Western philosophy based on these must be critically reconsidered.
These criticisms do not entail the end of philosophy. We need to look for new ways of thinking, and we may find some clues in centrality of language suggested by Wittgenstein, sociability of the mind, inter-dependance of existence, and East Asian concept of Li(禮) or correct name(正名). We should note that East Asian philosophers have developped a long tradition of philosophy without concepts of self-identity, philosophical superlatives, or even without the notion of truth.
