초록

이 글은 수자원이 부족한 산시성(山西省) 천역(泉域) 사회의 민간 물관리 방식을 중심으로, 민간전설에 담긴 마을공동체 간의 관계와 조직 운영에 대한 설명과 해석방식을 고찰하고, 전설의 배후에 숨겨진 사회생태관을 탐구하고자 하였다.
본 연구는 산시성 서남부 ‘사사오촌(四社五村)’에서 수집한 32편의 전설을 통해, ‘불평등 속의 평등’이란 사회생태관이 전설에서 어떻게 나타나며, 그 특징은 무엇인지에 대해 분석하여 세 가지로 정리하였다. 첫째, ‘천인합일(天人合一)’의 생태관으로, 사사오촌을 하나의 공동체로 보고 그 유래와 활동에 관한 것을 설명하고 있다. 둘째, ‘천인호제(天人互濟)’의 생태관으로, 사사오촌의 치열한 용수 분쟁을 설명하고 있다. 셋째, ‘인정호혜(人情互惠)’의 생태관으로, 사사오촌이 용수 갈등을 비교적 평화적으로 처리한다는 내용을 담고 있다.
이상과 같은 분석을 통해 볼 때, 전설은 상징일 뿐만 아니라 사회적 질서의 형성 원인과 행위 준칙에 대한 민간적 해석을 제공하고 있다. 전설은 간접적 서사(敍事)의 방식으로 허구에 현실을 결합하여, 민간에서 비롯된 기층사회의 생존 논리를 이면에 담고 있다. 달리 말하면, 우리는 전설을 통해 질서 있게 발전된 사회 구조와 심층 의식을 발견할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on the folk water governance of Spring area society in Shanxi Province, pays attention to the relationship between resource shortage crisis and social problems such as water resource management, investigates how legends explains village community relations and organizational operation, and discusses the social ecological view hidden behind the legends.
This study takes the "Si She Wu Cun(four communities and five villages)", a community with serious water shortage for a long time in southwest Shanxi, as an example. It collects 32 legends, and interprets the social and ecological views contained in these legends in three categories. First, the ecological view of the unity of heaven and man, which mainly focuses on the legend groups that regard Si She Wu Cun as a community and describe their origin and activities, including "Legend of the community and its leaders" and "Legend of rainy days". Second, the ecological view of mutual aid between heaven and man, which mainly focuses on the legend group about the fierce water disputes in Si She Wu Cun, including "the boss is always the boss", "the village legend of fighting" and "the legend of killing in front of the temple and burying behind the temple". Third, the ecological view of human reciprocity, which mainly focuses on the legend group that tells Si She Wu Cun to deal with water conflicts in a relatively peaceful way, including "the legend of compulsory water", "the legend of dowry water" and "the legend of banquet water". Based on the Ecology of Freedom of American social ecologist Murray Bookchin and the viewpoint of "equality in inequality", this study analyzes the performance and characteristics of the above social ecology concepts in the legend of Si She Wu Cun.
This paper interprets Si She Wu Cun from the perspective of coping with resource crisis and folk water governance. It is found that legend is not only a symbol, but also provides a folk explanation of the causes of this order and code of conduct. Legend combines reality and relevance in fiction in an indirect narrative way, which hides the Survival Logic of grass-roots society derived from local areas. From which, we can see through the structure and deep consciousness of orderly social development.
