정동을 통한 장소의 사유와 경험의 공감각-로니 혼과 레이첼 화이트리드 작품 중심으로 (Using Affect for the Contemplation of Place and Synesthesia of Experience - focused on the works of Roni Horn and Rachel Whiteread)

초록

예술작품은 정동의 응결체로 볼 수 있으며, 예술가가 작업의 과정에서 작품과의 관계 속에서 정동하고정동되기의 결과물이라 할 수 있다. 정동은 신체의 이행이라는 과정의 상태로써 지각으로 포착되기 이전에 신체가 대상에 영향을 주고 영향을 받아들이는 상호관계적 변이를 이르는 말이다. 본 연구의 목적은 미결정체로서 정동의 잠재적 성격에 주목하면서, 이를 바탕으로 장소, 공간을 다루는 예술작품에서 신체의 경험이 가지는 공감각적 지각을 정동 개념으로 분석한다. 예술가가 작품의 개념적 접근과정에서 주목하고 있는 체화된 경험의 마주침의 지점들을 살펴보고, 작품이 내재하고 있는 정동의 잠재성이 관객과 감응할 수 있는 가능성에 대해 살펴본다. 연구방법은 우선 2장에서 정동의 개념을 스피노자, 들뢰즈, 마수미의 계보를 따라 살펴보고 신체의 경험이 가지는 정동의 잠재성에 대한 이해를 확장한다. 이러한 논의를 바탕으로 3장에서는 장소와 공간을 작품의 주요 소재로 사용하는 두 작가 로니혼과 레이첼 화이트리드의 작업을 분석한다. 두 예술가의 작품분석을 통해 동시대 미술에서 정동이 응결되고 드러나는 지점을 확인하고, 또한 작품을 이해하고 분석하는데 있어 정동적 사유가 중요한 감각이자 잠재적 능력으로 작동하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 본 연구는 예술가의 작업 과정을 비롯하여 관객이 작품을 체험하는데 있어 정동적 영역에서 비의식적 마주침이 촉발되고 있음을 보여주고, 이를 통해 개체와 개체가 연결되고 공감 할 수 있는 가능성을 포함한 정동의 확장된 이해를 도울 것이다.

영어초록

Artworks are inherently the concretion of ‘affect’. That is, artworks are the product of affecting and being affected in the continuous interrelationship between an artist and their work in the process of creation. In the spontaneous or enduring process of body transformation, ‘affect’ refers to the interrelated transition that the body of artist/audience and the object(s) of artwork are affecting and being affected each other even before the artist/audience consciously perceives this transformation process. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to focus on the potential nature of ‘affect’ and examine multi-sensory awareness for physical experiences that are embedded in the artworks of place and space by using the concept of ’affect’. To do so, this study investigates the encountering moments of embodied experiences. More specifically, this study adopts a conceptual approach that an artist focuses on the artwork and examines the possibility whether the potential nature of ‘affect’ in the artwork can affect and be affected by audiences. In terms of research method, Chapter 2 reviewed the passage of discourses on ’affect’ by Spinoza, Deleuze, and Massumi in order to extend our understanding on the potential nature of ’affect’ in physical experiences. Then, Chapter 3 analized the artworks of Roni Horn and Rachel Whiteread who used place and space for their main ideas of artwork creation. The analysis of these two artists’ works represent the moment of congealing and revealing ‘affect’ in the contemporary art. Moreover, this study confirms that affective thoughts are an important sense and potential ability to understand and analyze artworks. This study demonstrates that unconscious contacts are provoked in the realm of ‘affect’ when artists create their works and audiences experience them. By doing so, this study contributes to the extended understanding of ‘affect’, which includes the potential nature of connecting and sympathizing individuals as the outcome of appreciating artworks.
