HEALTH HABITS OF PHILIPPINE HIGH SCHOOL IN CASE OF NORTHERN ILOILO POLYTECHNIC STATE COLLEGE OF LABORATORY HIGH SCHOOL

초록

This study compared the health seeking and enhancing problems and behavior of high school students at the Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College, Laboratory High School (NIPSC LHS), Estancia, Iloilo in Visayas, Philippines, from both sexes and students whose parent’s educational qualification are involved.
Health education should give students fundamental concept needed to help them and make decision that will affect their throughout the years.
Specifically, this study was designed to answer the following questions:
1. What are the health habits of the high school students in terms of personal cleanliness and hygiene; diet and nutrition; Exercise, rest and recreation and; medical and dental health.
2. What are there significant relationship between health habits and the demographic characteristics of the students ?
The findings of the study showed that the high school students at LHS have a poor health habits. The high school students, whether taken as an entire group or classified according to age, gender, father and mother highest educational qualification have poor health practices. This meant that they are not very particular with their personal health habits and that their parents are also not very particular in teaching or helping their sons or daughters to practice good health.
The high school students at LHS put only anemphasis or are concerned with their personal cleanliness and grooming. Personal hygiene is the habits of maintaining cleanliness of the body. It is done through bathing, hair grooming, and hand washing, brushing teeth, trimming nails and cleaning ears among others. This habit is very common among adolescence. However, according to study, personal hygiene is not perceived and acknowledge as protection against diseases. Diet and nutrition is very important to the development of adolescence to adulthood.
Study shows that 2out of 10 Filipino youth are malnourish. Exercise, rest and recreation contribute to the state-being of youths. Personal exercise and recreation should be enjoyable and entertaining. But high school students at LHS have a poor practice in such activities. Visiting or going to the Doctor or dentist regularly is not also common among the high school students. They have a poor practice with regard to their medical and dental activities.
Study shows that adolescents are often unwilling to utilize health services when they are available and this represents missed opportunities to prevention of health problems. Most adolescents do not recognize their illnesses and are not aware of the serious consequences of their illness, they do not know that they can get help to prevent their illness and can be treated if they arise.
