아동문학 장과 책 읽는 여성들 - 1990년대 출판시장·국가정책·독서운동을 바탕으로 - (Children’s Literature and Female Readers -with a focus on the publishing market, reading framework and the 1990s citizen’s movement)

초록

문학사를 다시 쓰는 최근의 여러 시도들은 아동문학사 안에서도 다양한 시기와 주체에 대한 관심을 요청하고 있다. 이 글은 1990년대 아동문학 출판 및 독서 문화를 조망하는 가운데 집단적 정체성으로서 여성이 어떻게 형성되고 활용되었는지를 분석한다. 1990년대는 소비자-시민문화의 확장이나 독서교육 시장의 부상과 관련해 아동청소년문학이 질적·양적으로 급등했던 시기이다. 이와 함께 대거 나타난 여성 아동문학 작가들에 대한 주목은 당대에도 있었지만, 여성 출판인이나 학부모 여성의 등장은 문학계 내에서 큰 관심을 받지 않았다. 이들은 대체로 성장기인 6~70년대에 여성잡지나 외국문학을 읽고 80년대에 대학을 다니는 등 고등교육을 받은 세대로, 앞 세대 여성들이 그 독서량에 한계가 있고 자녀를 위한 아동문학 독서에서 주로 출판사나 학교 교사에 의존했던 것과 달리 적극적으로 아동문학의 독자가 된다.
그중 일부는 아동도서 출판계에 종사하는 여성들로 여성편집인클럽 등을 주재하면서 자신들의 전문적인 안목을 형성한다. 80년대 말부터 빠르게 성장한 아동도서 출판시장은 전집 위주에서 단행본 위주로 바뀌며 작품성에 대한 관심이 증가하고, 일러스트레이션 등 관련 분야 역시 체계화된다. 여성들이 아동문학 편집·일러스트레이션·번역에 진입한 데에는 시공간에 크게 얽매이지 않아 가사노동과 병행이 가능했다는 점도 고려되는데, 대개는 영세한 사업장에 종사하거나 프리랜서 노동이 많아 경제 위기의 타격을 쉽게 받았다. 또 이들 ‘커리어 우먼’의 역할은 아동문학 자체나 문화 산업의 발전보다는 엘리트 여성의 개인적인 성공담으로만 말해지기 쉬웠다.
그리하여 가정으로 귀환한 여성들은 아동문학 독서를 비롯한 자녀 교육을 통해 자기가치를 재증명한다. 제도적으로도 독서 강좌나 이동도서관 등 주부의 독서 환경이 마련되고, 입시에서 논술 교육의 중요성이 커지면서 ‘책 읽는 엄마’의 역할이 강조된다. 엄마들은 독서 교육을 혼자만의 일, 즉 개별 가정의 사적 영역에 머물지 않고 주부의 정치성을 획득하는 기로로 삼기도 한다. 여성운동의 한 갈래로서 80년대 말 나타난 주부 운동에는 그림책 모임의 사례가 언급된다. 대표적으로 어린이도서연구회의 지역 조직 동화읽는어른 모임은 어도연이 교사 중심에서 학부모 중심으로 이동하는 데에 영향을 끼쳤으며, 회보 『동화읽는어른』을 통해 남성 아동문학가 중심의 아동문학 비평의 장에 여성 학부모로서의 경험과 그에 동반되는 여성주의적 관점을 도입했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 이들의 아동문학 읽기는 학부모를 아동문학의 이차 독자로서 한정하지 않고 그들만의 경험과 환경 속에서 얻는 감동과 심미적 쾌락을 새롭게 분석할 여지를 남긴다.

영어초록

Several recent attempts to rewrite the history of literature have required to observe various periods and subjects within the history of children’s literature. This article looks through the publishing and reading culture of children’s literature in the 1990s and analyzes how women’s identification was formed and deployed there. With expansion of the category of consumer-citizen, children and youth literature showed a qualitative and quantitative development in the 1990s, also in the relation of the rise of the reading education market. However, compared to the attention to the growth of female writers, the appearance of female publishers and mothers as a major reader of children’s literature did not receive much attention within the literary world. While women of previous generations had limitations in reading children’s literature, only to rely on publishers or school teachers, these new group of women is the generation who read women’s magazines or foreign literature in the 1960~70s and received higher education in universities of the 1980s.
Women in the publishing industry of children’s books formed their professional perspective participating in collective activities such as the meeting of Korean Women Edutior Club. The publishing market, which has grown rapidly since the late 1980s, has changed their central form from a collection to a single children’s book, increasing its attention to the quality of work and systemizing related fields such as illustration. Young women entered easily into the spheres of editing, illustration, and translation which were less bound by time and space, making it possible to run parallel with household labor. They worked frequently in a small business or freelance work, which made them vulnerable to the economic crisis. In addition, the role of these ‘career women’ was rather represented as the personal success stories of elite women not with the discourse of the generic and industrial development of children’s literature.
Thus, women who returned to their homes had to re-prove their value through children’s education, including reading children’s literature. With the emergence of reading education of students, the role of ‘reading mothers’ was emphasized and the institutional environment for housewife readers such as mobile libraries and reading educator courses was established. Simultaneously, mothers also used the act of reading children’s literature as a way to acquire the political power of housewives rather than the private realm of individual families, even as a branch of the women’s movement The Korean Children’s Book Association’s local group, Adults Reading Children’s Book led the change of central subject in civic reading organization from school teachers to women parents, and through the journal Adults Reading Children’s Book, they inscribe women’s experience and feminist perspectives in the male-critic centered field of children’s literature criticism. Their work does not limit parents to secondary readers of children’s literature, but leaves room for a new analysis of the emotions and aesthetic pleasures reading children’s literature with the experiences and environments as an adult.
