크로스오버 그림책의 이중 수용 양상 : 『Pish, Posh, Said Hieronymus Bosch』 분석을 중심으로 (Dual Reception of Crossover Picture Books: A Case Study of Pish, Posh, Said Hieronymus Bosch)

초록

본 연구는 크로스오버 그림책이 어른 독자와 어린이 독자에 의해 이중으로 수용될 수 있는 가능성을 상호텍스트성을 중심으로 보여주는 것을 목표로 한다. 미국 작가 Willard가 글을 쓰고, Leo & Diane Dillon이 그림을 그린 『Pish, Posh, Said Hieronymus Bosch』을 연구 대상으로 삼아 분석을 시도하였다. 이 작품은 예술판타지(art fantasy)라고 명명될 수 있는 크로스오버 그림책으로, 시각 예술 작품에 기반한 상호텍스트성(visual intertextuality)에 바탕하여 구축된 허구적 아이코노텍스트(iconotext)이다. 그런데 시각적 상호텍스트성은 독자의 백과사전적 지식의 정도에 따라 그 해독이 달라질 수 있는 글쓰기 전략이다. 다시 말해, 크로스오버 그림책 안에는 두 층의 이야기가 존재한다는 의미이다. 상호텍스트성과 무관하게 도달할 수 있는 표층 서사가 하나이고, 상호텍스트성과 관련 있는 심층 서사가 또 하나이다. 따라서 시각 예술 작품 및 경향에 대한 배경지식이 부족한 아동 독자는 다른 텍스트와의 연결 가능성에 상관 없이 해당 아이코노텍스트의 표층 이야기에 접근할 수 있다. 반면, 충분한 배경 지식을 갖춘 어른 독자는 해당 아이코노텍스트에 명시 혹은 암시되어 있는 상호텍스트적 실마리를 찾아 심층 이야기의 의미망에 도달하게 된다.

영어초록

The purpose of this research is to study dual readership of a crossover picturebook in terms of intertextuality. Child and adult readers, who constitute dual readership, have different levels of encyclopedic competence in terms of textual actualization. Intertextuality, as one textual mechanism, shows that there is a correlation between dual reception and the background knowledge of readers. This article deals with a specific form of crossover picture books, namely, art fantasy: the latter is defined as fictional picture books inspired by an artist's life or his/her works. Because art fantasy picture books are closely intertwined with visual arts, visual intertextuality becomes an essential textual mechanism to this iconotext. This paper analyzed Pish, Posh, Said Hieronymus Bosch, a crossover picturebook related with the Dutch painter of the Renaissance known for his use of fantastic imagery to illustrate moral and religious concepts.
A visual intertextual connection subdivides the narrative into two levels: a surface level is a story that a novice reader without any prior knowledge appropriate to grasping intertextual connection is able to understand; a deep level is a hidden story level only for an experienced reader. These two different readers can construct meaning out of the surface level, while only the experienced reader can decode the deep level, thanks to his/her background knowledge. Therefore the crossover picture book results in either an inclusive or exclusive relationship in terms of dual readership. Because of the lack of prior knowledge on the Dutch painter, young readers are excluded from the deep level of narrative, while adult readers have access to both of these levels.
When it comes to Pish, Posh, Said Hieronymus Bosch, the iconotext comprises two stories: the one about the painter's housekeeper and the other one about the painter. The former is a surface level of narrative that the readers can apprehend regardless of intertextual connection. The latter constitutes a deep level of narrative that they can appreciate only if they are aware that the picturebook is a parody of the Dutch artist’s paintings. Visual intertextuality makes this art fantasy picturebook embrace two different stories, and consequently dual readership as implied readers.
