요인분석적 자동차 시장구조 분석모형의 속성차원 해석 (Interpreting the Attribute Dimensions of the Factor-Analytic Automobile Choice Model)

초록

기존연구의 요인분석적 시장구조 분석방식은 다항로짓 선택모형을 적용하여 브랜드별 절편을 브랜드 가치로 간주하고 속성수준과 속성평가의 선형조합으로 모형화하였다. 그러나 요인분석적 방식에 따라 브랜드 가치를 다차원 속성으로 분해하였지만 속성차원의 해석은 근접 공간에 함께 위치한 브랜드들의 이미 알려진 특징을 근거로 주관적으로 해석하는 정도였다. 또한 대부분의 연구가 포장 소비재 시장에 국한되어 있었고, 분석단위도 시장을 협소하게 정의했기 때문에 10개 브랜드 내외였다. 본 연구는 선행연구의 제한적인 부분을 보완하는 차원에서 내구재인 자동차를 분석대상으로 하였으며 경쟁 차종을 300개 이상 실증분석에 포함하였다. 가장 중요한 차별점은 단일 차원의 브랜드 가치를 2개의 속성차원으로 분해하고 개별 차원의 의미있는 해석을 위해 소비자의 물리적 속성평가를 설명변수로 하는 회귀분석을 실시한 것이다.
단일차원의 자동차 브랜드 가치가 두 개의 속성차원으로 분해되었을 때 경제적 측면과 성능 측면으로 구분되는 것으로 확인되었다. 기존연구에서 속성차원을 해석하는 방식은 속성공간에 분포되어 있는 브랜드를 보고 속성차원을 주관적으로 해석했다면 본 연구에서는 회귀분석을 통해 보다 객관적인 해석이 가능하도록 했으며 설명변수의 유의성도 통계적으로 검정 가능해졌다.
향후 연구방향으로서 본 연구의 실증자료에 한해서 자동차 브랜드 가치가 경제적 측면과 성능 측면의 속성차원으로 분해된 것인지 이러한 속성차원이 지속적으로 나타나는 안정적인 구조인지에 대한 후속연구가 필요하다고 판단되며, 본 연구에서 확인된 2개의 차원 이상의 속성차원이 확인될 가능성에 대해서도 관찰이 필요하다고 판단된다.

영어초록

Most of previous studies on the market structure were based on the frequently purchased packaged goods market. Among them, the factor-analytic market structure models investigated the relationship between observed attributes and consumer choice, and attempted to subjectively interpret the underlying dimensions of the inferred vehicle attributes by examining the relative locations of the choice alternatives in the attribute space. On the other hand, the current study investigates the automobile industry which is characterized by its large number of competing vehicle models (which are durable goods) and attempts to relate the consumer’s evaluation of observed vehicle attributes to the underlying dimensions of the inferred attributes from the factor-analytic approach.
Empirical application of the regression of the two underlying dimensions on various explanatory variables (e.g., vehicle price, rebate, maintenance cost, horse power, interior & exterior design, style, fuel economy) showed that one dimension was closely related to economic value and the other to vehicle performance value. This regression approach resulted in more objective interpretation of the inferred dimensions which was not possible in the previous analysis of the factor-analytic models that relied heavily on subjective interpretation of the dimensions.
In the future research, it would be fruitful to examine the consistency of the two underlying dimensions of the economic and performance values over time to exclude the possibility that the result only holds for the data used for the current study. In addition, it might be necessary to check if two dimension solution is optimal because it could be possible to find higher dimension solution is optimal in the other data sets.
