초록

전쟁은 물리적 충돌이 끝난 이후에도 기억이라는 새로운 전장에서 계속된다. 그 대표적인사례로 베트남전쟁은 기억의 재현을 둘러싸고 미국 내 정치 담론, 문화산업, 그리고 디아스포라 공동체내부에서 심각한 갈등과 윤리적 불균형을 야기해왔다. 베트남계 미국 작가 비엣탄응웬(Viet Thanh Nguyen)은 이와 같은 문제의식을 바탕으로 픽션과 논픽션을 넘나들며, 전쟁 기억의 소외된 주체를 복권하고, 기억과 망각의 윤리적 조건을 재정의하려는 문학적 시도를 이어왔다. 본 연구는 그의 소설 동조자와 논픽션 아무것도 사라지지 않는다를 통합적으로 분석함으로써, 전쟁 기억의 형평성과 감정의 윤리 사이의 관계를 탐구한다. 기존의 연구들이 탈식민적 혼종성, 남성성, 난민성과 같은 정치·문화적 정체성에 초점을 두었던 반면에, 이 논문은 감정 자체를 윤리적 판단의 핵심으로 보며, 마사 누스바움(Martha Nussbaum)의 감정윤리학 중 연민(compassion), 분노, 용서, 서사적 상상력 이론을 이론적인 틀로 삼는다. 연구 방법으로응웬의 두 저작을 대상으로 감정의 인지 구조, 윤리적 반응 가능성, 그리고 기억의 책임성을 중심으로 한 서사 분석을 수행하였으며, 픽션과 논픽션의 상호텍스트적 상응 관계를 해석하였다. 동조자는 전쟁을 기억하는 분열된 주체의 내면을 통해 감정의 윤리적 훈련 가능성을 탐색하고, 아무것도 사라지지않는다는 이를 철학적·비판적 언어로 구조화하여 ‘공정한 기억(just memory)’과 ‘공정한 망각(just forgetting)’이라는 핵심 개념을 제시한다. 연구 결과, 기억의 공정성은 감정의 형평성과 밀접하게 연관되어 있으며, 적의 고통에 감정적으로 반응할 수 있는 능력은 기억 정의의 윤리적 출발점으로 인식된다. 이는 누스바움이 주장한 감정 훈련을통한 정의로운 공동체 형성과도 깊은 접점을 이루며, 응웬의 문학이 단순한 증언 서사를 넘어 감정 윤리학의 문학적 실험으로 기능함을 보여준다. 본 연구는 문학이 감정, 윤리, 기억을 통합하는 실천의 장으로 작용할 수 있음을 입증하며, 감정의 정치성과 기억 정의의 철학을 문학적 감응을 통해 재조명하는데 기여한다. 나아가 세계시민교육, 탈식민 기억 공동체 형성, 디아스포라 감정 공동체 등의 분야로 이론적 논의를 확장할 수 있는 가능성을 열어준다.

영어초록

War does not end with the cessation of physical conflict; it continues on a new battlefield called memory. A representative example is the Vietnam War, which has triggered serious conflicts and ethical imbalances over the representation of memory within U.S. political discourse, cultural industries, and diasporic communities. Vietnamese American writer Viet Thanh Nguyen, motivated by this critical awareness, has engaged in literary efforts that cross the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction. Through his works, he aims to restore the silenced subjects of war memory and redefine the ethical conditions of remembering and forgetting. This study conducts an integrated analysis of his novel The Sympathizer and nonfiction work Nothing Ever Dies, in order to explore the relationship between the fairness of war memory and the ethics of emotion.
Whereas previous studies have focused on political and cultural identities such as postcolonial hybridity, masculinity, and refugee subjectivity, this paper places emotion itself at the center of ethical judgment. Drawing on Martha Nussbaum’s ethics of emotion—particularly her theories on compassion, anger, forgiveness, and narrative imagination—the study conducts a narrative analysis of Nguyen’s two texts. It examines the cognitive structures of emotion, the possibility of ethical response, and the responsibility of memory. The Sympathizer explores the potential for ethical training through the emotionally fractured inner self of a memory-bearing subject, while Nothing Ever Dies systematizes this affective dimension into philosophical and critical discourse, advancing the core concepts of “just memory” and “just forgetting.” The study finds that fairness in memory is closely tied to emotional equity, and that the ability to respond affectively to the suffering of the enemy constitutes the ethical foundation of memory justice. This conclusion resonates with Nussbaum’s vision of a just community grounded in the training of moral emotions, and it highlights Nguyen’s literary project as an experimental model of emotional ethics rather than a mere testimonial narrative. Ultimately, this research demonstrates that literature can serve as a practical space that integrates emotion, ethics, and memory.
It contributes to rethinking the political and philosophical dimensions of emotion and memory justice through literary responsiveness, while opening possibilities for theoretical expansion into areas such as global citizenship education, postcolonial memory communities, and diasporic affective solidarity.
