마마데이의 『새벽으로 만든 집』 -아벨의 탈주와 생성- (N. Scott Momaday’s 『House Made of Dawn』: Escaping and creating of Abel)

초록

본 논문에서는 들뢰즈와 가타리가 말하는 ‘소수 문학’의 특징으로 마마데이(N. Scott Momaday)의『새벽으로 만든 집』(House Made of Dawn)을 바라보려 한다. 또한, 주인공 아벨이 겪는 소외감과 상실감을 되찾기 위한 치유 과정을 탈주와 생성하는 과정으로 살펴 볼 것이다. 이 소설은 원주민 문학이 미국 문학의 비주류에 있었던 시절에 소수민족의 목소리를 내어 견인차 역할을 했던 작품으로 원주민의 과거와 현재, 미래의 모습을 잘 묘사하고 있으며 현대를 사는 젊은 원주민 아벨의 고뇌와 갈등, 치유 과정이 잘 드러나 있다. 동시대를 살고 있는 주인공 아벨이 서로 다른 두 문화 사이에서 정체성의 혼란을 겪으며 원주민 문화와 백인 문화의 경계에서 주변인처럼 어느 곳에도 소속되지 못하고, 현재 상황에서 벗어나고자 하는 탈주와 생성은 아벨이 진정한 자신만의 정체성을 찾는 여정으로 볼 수 있다.
아벨이 기존에 자신이 지니고 있었던 전통적인 원주민 가치체계에서 벗어난 탈주는 방황과 고통과 혼란스러움을 안겨 주지만 원주민 대대로 구전되어 내려오는 전통적인 노래와 신화, 이야기 등을 듣고 조상들의 삶의 지혜와 생활 방식을 받아들이며 상처를 치유 받는다. 뿐만 아니라 이질적인 백인 문화적 요소와의 접촉을 통해 다른 문화를 배척하기보다는 부분적으로 수용하려는 태도를 통해 새롭게 생성되는 모습 또한 보여주고 있다. 아벨은 현대를 살아가는 젊은 원주민의 시대상을 보여주는 인물로서 과거 전통 문화만을 고집하여 현대와 단절 된 삶을 살아가는 것이 아닌 자신만의 새로운 삶을 살아가기 위해 서로 다른 문화와 조화를 이루고 타협하며 긍정적이고 창조적인 새로운 정체성을 가지게 된다. 대부분의 원주민 소설은 고정화되고 정형화된 원주민 개인의 정체성 획득이라는 주제로 끝나지만 이 소설은 정체성이라는 것이 고정된 것이라기보다는 탈주와 생성을 통한 유동적이며 지속 가능한 삶의 가능성을 모색하고 있는 것으로 볼 수 있게 한다. 마마데이는 젊은 원주민 아벨이 그들의 전통문화의 가치와 체계를 잊지 않으면서 잘 보존하고, 물질문명의 현대 사회에 적응해서 두 문화의 융합과 조화를 바라는지도 모른다. 따라서, 이 소설을 ‘원주민의 정체성 회복’이라는 좁은 의미보다는 좀 더 확장되고 발전되어 원주민의 정체성 획득이라는 의미를 넘어선 탈주와 변화와 생성의 의미를 담고 있다고 보았다.

영어초록

This thesis is to analyze the novel with characteristics of “minor literature” mentioned by Deleuze and Guattari. In addition, the process of Abel being recovered from isolation and feeling of loss is viewed as the process of escaping and creating. House Made of Dawn written by N. Scott Momaday worked as a driving engine of the Native American literature by speaking for the minority at the era when the Native American literature was part of the fringe culture. The novel well describes past, present, and future of Native Americans as well as agony, conflict and healing of Abel, a young Native American who lives in the modern times.
A young Native American, Abel was confused about his identity between the native culture and the white culture and became an outsider as he failed to be assimilated to any of the cultures. But he tried to escape from the dismal situation and create his own identity. The story is like Abel’s journey to find out his true self. When he first decided to abandon the traditional native values, he got lost and went through pain and confusion. But he listened to traditional songs, myths, and stories that had been passed on generation by generation, and finally his would could be healed by learning from his ancestor’s way of life and wisdom. Moreover, he accepted the other culture, although partially, by experiencing unfamiliar culture of the white people, instead of firmly excluding it. Abel is a person who depicts phases of the young Native Americans living in a modern society. He achieved new, positive, and creative identity by compromising and harmonizing with a different culture in order to maintain his own life, instead of sticking to the past and being isolated from the present.
Most Native American novels end with the theme of uniformed, stereotypical individual identity of a Native American. However, this novel tells us that identity is not a fixed one but can be flexible and sustainable by escaping and creating. Momaday may want the two cultures to be blended and harmonized with each other as a young Native American, Abel can successfully adapt to the modern society that represents materialized civilization, while remembering and preserving traditional culture and values. Therefore, the study views that the novel has the meaning of escaping, changing, and creating, which is more extended and developed concept from a narrow meaning of “a Native American’s recovery of identity.”
