한국 해양소설의 현 단계와 전망, 그 복된 짐 (The Present State of Korean Maritime Novels, and Its Blessed Burden)

초록

해양소설의 문학적 의미는 일반문학이 추구하는 것과 크게 다르지 않다. 다만, 다른 것이 있다면 보편적인 인간성 옹호와 문학정신의 표출 양상의 상이함이다. 그간 쥘 베른의 소설들은 대표적인 해양소설로 읽혀졌고, 우리 또한 그렇게 믿었다. 그런데 쥘 베른의 소설들에 나타난 바다는 실제적인 바다가 아닌 해석된 바다였다. 이를 안다면 좀 더 새로운 이해가 필요하다. 그의 소설은 ‘실재계는 바로 상상계다(L'imaginarie c'est le reel)’라는 의미심장한 전제 아래 씌어졌고, 여행, 과학의 발명, 식민지 건설이 작품의 중심 주제였다. 문제는 이런 전제와 주제가 당시 제국주의의 논리를 합리화시킨 데 있다. 이런 비판은 그간 행해진 쥘 베른의 해양소설에 대한 재평가와 해양소설에 대한 새로운 이해의 단초를 제공한다.
우리의 해양소설은 바다를 너무 고정 관념에서 주시했다. 그로 인해 해양소설이 보여주는 다양한 양상을 놓쳤다. 해양소설만의 주된 특성들은 간과되었고, 작품에 투영된 중층적․복합적 관계들도 간단히 처리되었다. 인간과 바다가 만나는 접점에서 발생되는 수많은 삶들은 땅을 보던 눈으로는 놓칠 수 있다. 더욱이 그런 삶들은 그 자체로 머물지 않고, 우리의 내면적 삶까지 새롭게 변형시킬 수 있다.
본 연구는 작가의 거주지나 바다체험에 대한 맹목적인 강조를 넘어 우리의 해양소설이 어떻게 걸어왔는지를 살폈다. 많은 작품은 아니지만, 특별히 주목되는 작품들을 중심으로 해양소설의 고유한 문학적 특성을 일별했다. 그러면서 우리 해양소설이 걸어갈 앞으로의 길도 모색했다. 이를 계기로 해양소설을 탄생시킨 우리의 문화적 전통과 역사로부터 부여된 삶을 반성적 · 체계적 · 완성적으로 성찰하고자 하였다.

영어초록

There is not much difference between the literary meaning of maritime novels and that of general literature. The difference that exists, however, lies in the dissimilarity in expressing the spirit of literature and the vindication of universal humanism. So far, Jules Verne's novels have earned an prominent place in the field of maritime novels, as we recognize it to be so. A new set of understanding, however, is necessary if we take into account that the sea in Verne’s masterpieces is not the actual sea itself, but a sea that has been interpreted. In reality, his maritime novels has been written under a significant premise of 'What is real is imaginary' (L'imaginarie c'est le real), and the main themes of his books were journeys, scientific discoveries and establishments of colonies. The problem lies in that those premises and themes have justified a rationale for the imperialism of his period. This perception questions his novel's high reputation and requires a new approach in understanding maritime novels.
So far, our maritime novels have been overly biased in its perception of the sea. Therefore, we have paid little attention to the diverse aspects that maritime novels have demonstrated. Main characteristics pertaining only to the maritime novels have been largely overlooked, and complex and multi-layered relationships reflected in the pieces were dealt with ease. Many lives arise at the point where man and sea meet, but with the eyes that we used to look at 'terra firme', we may not fully perceive them. Moreover, those lives may not remain as it is, but transform anew our inner life.
This research focused on the problems of our maritime novels that have concentrated heavily on the writer's neighborhood or experience over the sea. These problems are burdens that we can't escape from, but also a start point where we could explore diverse paths of development. Through those efforts, the research did not fail to discuss on the current state of our maritime novels. It also distinguishes maritime novel's unique literary aspect by reviewing few pieces worthy of special attention. Eventually, the research intended to provide an opportunity to systematically and completely reflect the life that has been endowed by our cultural tradition and history that have begotten maritime novels.
