초록

박서보는 5·16 군사쿠데타가 발발한 그 다음 해 1962년 10월에 국립도서관 화랑에서 〈원형질〉 연작을 전시했다. 이것은 박서보가 1950년대 말부터 탐구한 앵포르멜 미술(Informel Art) 탐구의 절정에 해당되는 것으로서 그의 예술적 성취의완성을 보여 주는 동시에 한국전쟁 이후 암울한 시대를 살아가는 한국의 자화상이기도 하다. 당시 미술비평가, 정규는 〈원형질〉 연작을 ‘절규하는 인간의 영상’이라고 평했다.
〈원형질〉 연작은 당시 한국 젊은이들의 내적 고통, 생의 허무, 절망 등의 트라우마를 표현하며 동시에 한국의 경제부국을 향한 도약(첫걸음)의 희망을 내포하고 있다. 박정희 군사정부는 부국강병을 위한 경제개발 정책을 과감하게 추진하기 시작했다. 군사정부는 당시 ‘앵포르멜’이라 불리운 추상미술을 혁명의 상징적 형식으로 지지했고, 그동안 타성적인 구상을 보여 줬던 〈국전〉을 개혁하기 시작했다. 뿐만 아니라 젊은 아방가르드 미술가들의 국제적인 진출을 적극적으로후원했고 또한 그들의 작품을 구매하기도 했다. 〈원형질〉 연작은 오늘날 한국전쟁 후의 혼란과 정신적 상처를 상징하며 그리고 암울한 상황을 극복하고자 하는젊은이들의 생존본능의 의미를 함축하고 있다.
〈원형질〉 연작은 앵포르멜 미술에 속하며 실존주의에 그 기반을 두고 있다.
박서보의 미술은 직접적으로 물질 그 자체를 보여 주는 충격을 던졌다. 그는 날것의 물질 그 자체의 잠재적 표현성을 탐구하는 데 몰입했다. 그의 물성을 탐구한작품은 이미지와 물질의 관계를 고찰하게 하며 전반적으로 실존주의에 영향을 받은 프랑스 앵포르멜 미술과 비교를 가능케 한다. 원형질 연작이 사용한 다양한 물질은 인간실존을 대변하는 것이다. 박서보와 그의 동료 미술가들은 1960년대에실존주의에 깊이 몰입했다. 중요한 미술 비평가였던 방근택은 1958-1960년 사이에 현대미술가협회의 젊은 현대 미술가들과 함께 앵포르멜 운동에 가담했으며 실존주의의 토론을 이끌었다. 한국에서 젊은 미술가들에게 실존주의는 한국전쟁의정신적 외상으로 인한 절규와 허무를 극복하는 대안책 역할을 했다. 실존주의, 현상학의 중요한 학자였던 사르트르는 “실존은 본질에 앞선다.”라고 주장했다. 사르트르는 현상학적인 방법으로 세계와 인간을 이해하고자 했으며, 절대적 존재로서 인간 의식을 현상학적인 증명으로 탐구했다. 실존주의자로서 사르트르는 역사적 상황과 장소에서 개인의 삶이 기억되어야 한다고 말한다.
〈원형질〉 연작은 이 같은 실존주의의 영향을 반영하고 있다. 이것은 그 시대의 상황, 환경, 조건 속에서의 인간의 실존적 이미지이다. 이 논문에서 필자는 원형질 연작을 통해 앵포르멜 미술에서 실존주의 영향을 밝히면서, 또한 사르트르의 이론에 초점을 맞추어 ‘실존적 인간’의 의미를 함축하고 있다는 관점에서 고찰하고자 한다.

영어초록

In October 1962, the year following the 5·16 military coup, Park Seo-Bo exhibited a series of Protoplasm in the gallery of the National Library. This series is the epitome of Art informel that Park has investigated since the late 1950’s. Not only does it display the new artistic process in Park’s works, but it is also a self-portrait of Koreans living in the darkest years following the Korean War. Art critic Chung Kyu(정규) stated that the shapes in the Protoplasms are the ‘Images of the Screaming Human’.
The Protoplasms represents the traumatic experiences of the young Korean generation such as inner pain, futility of life, and despair. At the same time, it signifies hope in Korea’s economic takeoff. During the period of General Park Chung-hee’s military government, drastic measures were taken to boost Korea’s economy for national prosperity and military power.
Regarded as a symbolic form of revolution, the new abstract art called “Art Informel” was promoted by General Park’s military government. The system of the 〈Korea National Exhibition〉 was reformed, and young avant-garde artists were sponsored by receiving opportunities to go abroad. The Protoplasms has now come to symbolize psychological wound, disorder post-Korean War, and young people’s instinct for survival to overcome a despairing situation.
The Protoplasms is a form of Art Informel and has its roots in Existentialism. Park’s art has shocked its audience through direct display of material itself. Park focused on the potential expressiveness of raw material. His work leaves one to consider a new relationship between the image and material, and can be compared to the French Art Informel that was greatly influenced by existentialism. The diversity of materials used in the Protoplasmsrepresents human existence.
Park Seo-Bo and his fellow artists submerged themselves in Existentialism in 1960s. Bang Keun Taek, an important art critic, joined the Informe lmovement from 1958 to 1960 with the contemporary young artist group from ‘Modern Artist association’, and became a significant provider of Existentialism. To young artists, Existentialism was the alternative means to overcome despair and hollowness brought by the Korean War.
Jean-Paul Sartre, one of the key philosophers of existentialism and phenomenology, claimed that “existence precedes essence”. He tried to understand the human and the world through the phenomenological method, and attempted to make the philosophical verification of the human consciousness as an absolute being to a solid groundwork for a phenomenological ontology. As Existentialist, Sartre stated that “if a certain Jean-Paul Sartre is remembered, I would like people to remember the milieuor historical situation in which I lived, ... how I lived in it, in terms of all the aspirations which I tried to gather up within myself.” The Protoplasms reflects the effects of Existentialism. It is a symbolic images of the human existence under the circumstances, environment, and conditions of that period.
In this paper, I discuss the Protoplasms by tracing the effects of Existentialism in Art Informel. Focusing on the theories of Sartre, the series is investigated from the perspective that it signifies ‘human existence’.
