정지용의 「바다2」, 혼돈에서 질서로 (From Chaos to Cosmos -A Study on Jeong Ji-yong's Poem "Sea 2"-)

초록

본고는 「바다2」의 해석을 돕기 위해 알려지지 않은 문화적 배후를 탐색했다. 그 결과 구약성경의 창조신화와 고대 근동의 신화 “신들의 싸움” 모티프를 발견할 수 있었다. 이 신화들에서 바다는 혼돈의 괴물이고 신은 투쟁 끝에 혼돈을 제압하고 질서를 부여하는데 이것이 곧 세계의 창조다.
이러한 문화적 배경을 이해하면 「바다2」의 난해성은 쉽게 해소된다. 도마뱀떼는 용이나 뱀, 악어로 묘사되는 성경의 바다 괴물에서 왔고, 바다에 변죽을 두르고 해도를 만드는 것은 바다와 육지를 분리하고 세부적으로 조형하는 창조 작업이다. 변죽은 성경의 거대한 저수조 “놋바다”를 계승했고 해도는 성경에 나타난 창조의 측량적 성격을 집약한 표현이다. 창조가 완료된 바다는 지구의 일부로서 지구의 움직임에 종속된 운동성을 가진다. 이것이 바로 우리에게 익숙한 조석(潮汐)이라는 질서다. 따라서 「바다2」는 혼돈에서 질서로 바다에서 지구로 가는 창조의 여정을 담은 작품이다.
그러나 창조신화 자체가 「바다2」의 주제는 아니다. 「바다2」는 시 창작 과정의 알레고리로 창조신화를 차용했고 극단적인 축소 지향을 통해 신의 창조와 차별을 두었다. 「바다2」를 시 창작 과정으로 볼 때 바다는 무질서하고 미분화된 시의 질료이며, 변죽은 카오스에 형상을 부여하는 시의 언어다. 변죽을 두르는 것이 시상을 잡는 단계라면 정밀한 해도를 만드는 것은 본격적으로 시를 쓰는 과정이다. 손을 떼었다가 다시 받쳐드는 것은 창작의 종료와 감상과 평가의 시작을 가리킨다. 완성된 지구/바다의 조화로운 운동성은 상상과 감동의 여지, 해석의 다양성과 관계될 것이며, 이러한 운동성을 보장하기 위해 변죽(언어)은 연잎 같은 유연성과 신축성을 지녀야 한다.
「바다2」는 『정지용시집』 출간기념시라 할 수 있을 정도로 『정지용시집』과 관계가 깊다. 『정지용시집』과 연결 지어 해석한다면 들어 올려진 바다, 지구는 바로 새로 출간되는 『정지용시집』일 것이다.

영어초록

This study explored the unknown cultural background of “Sea 2” in order to help interpret “Sea 2”. As a result, the Myth of Creation in the Old Testament and 'theomachy' motif in myths of Ancient Near East could be found. In these myths, the sea is 'chaos monster', and gods subdue the chaos after struggles and give order, which is the creation of the world.
When this cultural background is understood, the difficulty to understand “Sea 2” is easily resolved. The swarm of lizards came from the sea monsters in the Bible described as dragons, snakes, and crocodiles, and ringing a rim around the sea and making a nautical chart are a creative work to separate the sea and the land and shape them in detail. The rim succeeded to the 'Brazen sea', the huge water tank in the Old Testament, and the nautical chart is an expression that integrated the metric nature of the creation that appeared in the Bible. The completely created sea is a part of the earth and has the motility subordinate to the movement of the earth. This is the order termed tide familiar to us. Therefore, “Sea 2” is a work that contains the journey of creation going from chaos to order, from the sea to the earth.
However, the Myth of Creation per se is not the subject of “Sea 2”. “Sea 2” borrowed the Myth of Creation as an allegory of the process of poetic creation and was differentiated from God's creation through an extreme tendency to reduce. When the process of creation of the poem “Sea 2” is seen, the sea is the material of the disordered and undifferentiated poem, and the rim is the language of the poem that gives shape to the chaos. If ringing the rim is the stage of forming the poetic concept, making a precise nautical chart will be the process of writing the poem in earnest. Taking the hand off and holding it up again indicates the end of creation and the beginning of appreciation and evaluation. The harmonious motility of the completed earth/sea should be related to the room for imagination and impression and the diversity of interpretation, and to guarantee the motility as such, the rim (language) should be flexible and elastic like a lotus leaf.
“Sea 2” is closely related to the Collection of Jeong Ji-yong's Poems to the extent that it can be said to be a poem commemorating the publication of the Collection of Jeong Ji-yong's Poems. If interpreted in connection with the Collection of Jeong Ji-yong's Poems, the lifted sea and earth should be the newly published Collection of Jeong Ji-yong's Poems.
