사회계층과 고교유형이 대학 진학에 미치는 영향 -졸업 첫 해 진학생을 중심으로- (The Effect of Social Class and High School Type on Entrance to College: With a Focus on Students who Entered College Immediately after High School Graduation)

초록

본 연구에서는 특목고/자사고와 일반고로 구별되는 고교유형이 대학진학에 미치는 효과가 사회계층에 따라 다르게 나타나는지 확인하고자 하였다. 분석에 사용된 자료는 한국직업능력평가원에서 시행한 한국교육고용패널조사(KEEP) 4, 5차 년도 자료이고, 연구대상은 2007년 4차 년도 조사 당시 고등학교 3학년이었던 중3패널 중에서 2008년에도 조사된 일반계고교 진학자 755명과 특목고/자사고 학생 259명이다. 연구방법으로는 종속변수가 대학 순위와 같은 서열변수이기 때문에 순서형 회귀분석을 사용했다. 연구결과는 고교유형과 사회계층의 상호작용은 일반대학 진학에는 영향을 미치지 못하지만 상위대학 진학에는 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 상위계층의 학생은 일반고에 진학해도 상위대학 진학에 큰 불이익을 받지 않았다. 반면 하위계층의 학생은 일반고에 진학한 경우 상위대학 진학에 불리했지만 특목고/자사고에 진학한 경우 상위대학 진학 가능성이 높았다. 이런 결과는 하위계층의 학생이 유리한 학교 자원을 활용하여 개인적으로 불리한 계층지위를 극복할 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다.

영어초록

This study aims to test if the effect of high school type, which is divided into special-purpose high school/autonomous private high school vs. general high school, on entrance to college is differentiated by social class of students. Data for this study came from the 4th and 5th waves of the Korean Education and Employment Panel Survey conducted by the Korea Institute for Vocational Evaluation. The sample of this study consisted of 755 students of general high schools and 259 students of special-purpose/autonomous high schools who were high school seniors in the 4th wave in 2007. Ordered regression analysis was used because the dependent variable, the ranking of colleges and universities, was an ordered variable. The main research finding reveals that the interaction of high school type and social class has no effect on entrance to all colleges and universities, but has a significant effect on entrance to top-ranked colleges and universities. More specifically, students of the upper class, who have access to advantageous class resources, are not significantly affected in their chance to entrance to top-ranked colleges and universities even if they enter general high schools. Students of the lower class, who lack class resources, are the most disadvantaged group in the case of entrance to top-ranked colleges and universities if they enter general high schools. However, if they enter special-purpose/autonomous high schools, they increase their chance to enter top-ranked colleges and universities. This result suggests that students of the lower class can use advantageous school resources to overcome their disadvantaged class status.
