바우하우스 여성 직조가들의 업적과 사회적 역할에 관한 연구 (A Study on The Achievement and Social Role of Bauhaus Women Weavers)

초록

바우하우스는 현대 건축과 디자인 제반에 걸쳐 그 양식과 미학을 구축하고 종합 조형 예술 학교를 위한 새로운 교수법을 전 세계 대부분의 미술 대학에 전파한 20세기 가장 영향력 있는 미술 교육기관 중 하나이다. 하지만 현대 조형 예술 전반에 걸쳐 많은 영향력을 끼친 바우하우스의 평가에서 그 역사의 주체는 대부분 남성들로 이루어져 있는 것을 쉽게 확인할 수 있다. 역사는 주요 인물과 사건을 바탕으로 사실의 내용을 다양한 관점에서 해석하여 평가하는 것인데 여기에는 전통적으로 남성 중심적 견해가 대부분이다. 바우하우스의 전반적인 운영과 활동은 남성이 주축이 되어 진행되었지만 내부에는 수많은 여성들이 다양한 역할을 수행하며 존재하였다. 이에 본고에서는 역사적 사실을 기반으로 한 바우하우스의 흐름을 여성 예술가들의 활동과 업적을 중심으로 살펴보고자 한다. 학생으로서, 교육자로서, 그리고 교수의 부인으로서 그 역할과 활동들은 지금의 바우하우스를 있게 한 또 하나의 이유라 사료되기 때문이다.
바우하우스 여성 예술가들의 역할과 활동을 살펴보기 위해서는 직조 공방의 중점적인 연구가 이루어져야 한다. 직조 공방은 여성의 참여가 가장 많았고 그 활동이 활발했던 곳으로 여성 예술가들의 삶과 예술 세계의 고찰을 통해 그들이 끼친 사회적 영향력과 업적들을 평가해 볼 수 있는 최적의 장소라 판단된다. 특히, 애니 알버스(Anni Albers), 오티 베르거(Otti Berger), 레나 버그너(Léna Bergner), 그리고 군타 스퇼츠(Gunta Stölzl)의 전반적인 활동과 업적을 통해 그들이 끼친 사회적 영향력과 함께 실제보다 평가 절하되었던 바우하우스 여성 직조가들의 위상을 재정립할 수 있는 기회가 되기를 희망해 본다.

영어초록

Bauhaus is one of the most influential art academies in the 20th century that established the style and aesthetics of the overall modern architecture and design, and spread the new pedagogics for the comprehensive formative art schools to most of the art colleges around the world. Upon establishment, Bauhaus advocated educational reform and gender equality to become an anti-academism institution. Bauhaus freely crossed the borders of art, industry, and life to develop various designs and products. It also contributed to the birth of several artists and designers.
However, in the evaluation of Bauhaus, which has brought significant influence on the overall modern formative arts, it is easily found that the males were the main subjects in most of the historical events. History should include the interpretation of the facts and the relevant evaluation based on important characters and events, but in this case, they posed mainly the male-oriented opinions. Thus, this study aimed to review the flow of Bauhaus in perspective centered at female activities and achievements, based on historical facts. Even though the overall operation and social activities of Bauhaus from the establishment to the closure were performed focused on males, and that a few male artists and designers were known to the world, there existed many females who have an important role inside Bauhaus. It is considered that the roles and activities of females, who were a student, educator, or a wife of a professor, gave another reason for the existence of Bauhaus today.
In this study, it is focused on the research of the weaving workshop to identify the various roles and activities of females. The weaving workshop was one of the workshops began with the establishment of Bauhaus, where many female participation and activities were marked. Thus, it was the optimal place for exploring the life and art of the female artists. It will give us a chance to review the effects of Bauhaus on the progress of the modern fiber art through the contemplation of the female artists in Bauhaus, who have not been sufficiently studied until now, as well as to identify their social role in Weimar.
Especially, through the activities and achievements of women weavers such as Anni Albers, Otti Berger, Léna Bergner, and Gunta Stölzl, it will become a chance to reestablish the status of female artists in Bauhaus, who were devaluated compared to their actual activities and achievements.
