조선식산은행 일본인 행원의 식민지 기억 (The Chosun Shiksan Bank’s Japanese employees’ memory of the colonial period)

초록

이글의 목적은 조선식산은행의 일본인 행원이 패전 이후 일본으로 귀환한 뒤 무엇을 식민지 경험으로 어떻게 기억했는가를 살펴보고, 한국인 행원의 경우와 비교해보는 것이다. 귀환 후 일본인 행원은 행우회를 조직하고 회보와 기념지를 발행하였다. 그들에게 행우회와 그 활동은 식민지 시절을 기억하기 위한 하나의 장치였다.
은행원 개인들의 식민지 기억은 단편적 일상에 치우쳐 탈정치적인 듯이 보인다. 그러나 기억하지 않는, 망각된 부분까지 시야에 넣으면 고도의 정치성을 발견할 수 있다. 망각하려는 부분은 주로 전쟁 비용 마련과 같이 식민지 체제와 관련이 깊은 것이다. 이러한 특징은 한국인 행원의 기억에서도 유사하게 나타난다.
은행원의 집단 기억으로 자주 등장하는 것은 ‘평등 대우’와 ‘식은 정신’이다. 이러한 기억이 일본사회에 발신하는 메시지는 ‘우리는 군국주의의 주구나 착취자가 아니며 공정했다’는 점이다. 이는 식민지배와 자신의 삶을 합리화하면서 동시에 귀환 이후 자신들을 죄악시했던 일본 사회에서 ‘국민’으로 인정받으려는 것이다. 한국인 행원도 ‘식은 정신’을 언급했으며, 집단주의와 가족주의를 강조했다. 해방 이후 격동과 혼란 속에서 살아남기 위한 조직문화로서 식민지 경험이 활용된 것이다.
일본인 은행원들은 자신의 기억을 집단을 넘어 사회나 국가의 기억으로 남기기 위한 역사화 작업에도 참여했다. 역사화의 핵심 내용은 자신들이 조선의 산업발전에 기여했다는 점이며, 이를 부각시키기 위해 한국(인)의 정체성(停滯性)이 강조되었다. 이들에 따르면 한국 근대화의 서사 주체는 일본인이다. 반면 한국인 행원이 근대화 서사의 주체로 자신을 등장시킨 것은 1960년대 이후였으며, 그것도 역사적 맥락은 사상한 채 기능적 부분에 초점을 맞추었다.

영어초록

This thesis explores how the Chosun Shiksan Bank(朝鮮殖産銀行, Industrial bank of Chosun)’s Japanese employees remembered the colonial period and compared their memories to those of Korean counterpart. After returning to Japan, the former employees organized Haeng Woo Hoe(行友會, social gathering of bank employees), and published periodical journals and special bulletins for anniversaries. For them, Hang Woo Hoe and various activities within that gathering were a mechanism for remembering the colonial period.
These former employees’ memories of colonial period appear to be irrelevant to politics due to their tendency to be fragmentary and focused solely on everyday life. However, if we include the dismissed pieces of memories to analysis as well, these memories will start to reveal their political relevance. The fragments of memories that usually sank into oblivion are things strongly connected with the colonial system such as funding war. This tendency of selective remembrance also appears to the former Korean employees as well.
‘Principle of fair treatment’ and ‘spirit of Shiksan Bank’ emerge most often as the collective memories of the former employees. What these memories are trying to convey is that they were not exploiters or the running dog of militarism but that they were fair. By conveying this message, they were trying not only to justify colonial rule and their lives within it but also to be accepted as members of the Japanese society which considered them as sinners. The former Korean employees also brought up the ‘spirit of Shiksan Bank’ and emphasized groupism and familism. In order to survive in the midst of upheaval and chaos after Liberation, the former employees used the ‘spirit of Shiksan Bank’ as an organizational culture.
The former Japanese employees strived to include their memories of colonial period as a part of history so that they don’t merely remain as the memories of a certain group, rather become a memory of their nation. Within the process, they highlighted the fact that they attributed to the industrial development of Chosun and to do so, they emphasized Korean stagnation. According to them, a principal agent of modernization in Chosun was the Japanese. On the other hand, it was not until 1960s that the former Korean employees brought themselves up as the principal agent of modernization in Chosun. Furthermore, it was only confined to the functional role, dismissing their role within historical context.
