Despite the expectation that consumption of oolong tea would result in lowered risk of cardiovascular disease, the effect of oolong tea on cardiovascular disease has never been directly investigated. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of oolong tea powder on blood lipids, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzyme activity in liver tissue of ovariectomized rats. Thirty = two female Sprague-Dawley rats (body weight, 200 ± 5 g) were divided into sham and ovariectomy groups and were fed a control diet or a diet supplemented with oolong tea powder (50 g/kg diet) for a period of six weeks. Ovariectomized rats consumed more diets and consistently weighed more than ham rats throughout the six-week study period. Levels of serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol did not differ significantly among experimental groups. Significantly lower levels of serum triglyceride and atherogenic index were observed in the oolong tea groups compared with the control groups of ovariectomized rats. The concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) was significantly lower in the oolong tea groups than in the control groups. Antioxidant enzymes activity in liver tissue, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and catalase (CAT), was not significantly influenced by the oolong tea powder-supplemented diet. oolong tea supplementation has shown a significant association with a lower risk of hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis in ovariectomized rats.
