<콩쥐팥쥐> 문화콘텐츠 활용 사례로 본 고전 인물 비틀기 양상과 의미-<내 사랑 팥쥐>, <신데렐라 언니>를 중심으로- (Aspects of the Classic Character Twist and its Meaning in Cultural Contents: A Comparison of Kongjwi and Patjwi with My Love Patjwi and Older Sister of Cinderella)

초록

이 글은 고전문학에 등장하는 주요 인물(캐릭터)들의 전형적 성격에 대해 논의하고, 오늘날 이러한 인물들의 고정 이미지를 비틀어 새로운 콘텐츠로 활용한 사례를 살펴 그 효과와 남아있는 문제를 점검하는 데 목적이 있다. 고전문학에는 특히 전형적인 성격을 가진 인물이 많이 등장한다. 이것은 특정한 신분(계급)이나 직업을 가진 사람이 일반적이고 보편적으로 가진 특성을 집약하여 보여주는 것으로, 이야기를 전승, 확산시키는 데 큰 역할을 하였다. 즉 특정한 주제를 전달하고자 할 때, 전형적인 캐릭터의 등장과 보편적인 서사 구조는 사람들의 뇌리 속에 더 쉽고 오래도록 기억될 수 있는 장점이 있기 때문에 오늘날까지 다른 여러 서사 문학에서도 많이 활용된다.
이러한 주제를 가장 쉽게 설명할 수 있는 것이 계모형 가정서사에 등장하는 착한 주인공(본처 자식)과 그를 괴롭히는 악한 계모일 것이다. 대표적으로 <콩쥐팥쥐>, <장화홍련전>에서 콩쥐, 장화, 홍련이 모함을 받아 죽음의 위기를 맞지만 결국 자신들의 억울함을 밝히고 행복한 삶을 살게 되는 착한 주인공의 전형성을 보여준다. 그리고 이들 주인공과 대립하는 인물인 계모와 그의 자식들은 전처 자식을 모함하고 그들을 괴롭히는 인물로 등장하고 결국 죗값을 받는 악인의 전형적 모습으로 그려진다.
이러한 주요 인물들의 대립은 서사를 안정적이면서도 흥미롭게 끌고 가는 원동력이 된다. 하지만 그러한 전형성을 답습하다보면 사람들은 그것이 ‘뻔한 인물이 뻔한 이야기’를 하는 것으로 받아들여 결국 식상하게 여기기도 한다. 그럴 때 이것을 돌파할 수 있는 것이 주인공과 대립 인물의 입장을 바꿔서 생각해보거나, 보조 인물로 그려지는 인물의 행동에 대해 재해석해보는 것이다. 2000년대부터 주인공과 대립하는 인물을 전면에 내세워 그들의 숨겨진 이야기(새로운 면)를 들려주고 새로운 문제를 제기한 드라마가 많이 나오기 시작했다. 본고에서는 이 중 <콩쥐팥쥐> 서사와 좋은 대비를 이루는 <내 사랑 팥쥐>와 <신데렐라 언니>를 비교 대상으로 삼아, 착한 주인공의 전형성을 깨뜨린 ‘팥쥐’와 ‘신데렐라 언니’의 인물 성격을 분석하였다. 또한 이러한 고전 인물 비틀기가 던져준 시사점과 의의, 한계 등을 두루 살펴 오늘날까지 계속 활용할 수 있는 방안에 대해 검토해보았다.
첫째, 전형적 선악 인물 비틀기를 통해 다양한 인물 이해에 이를 수 있다. 둘째, 왕자님 남성 캐릭터의 이분화를 통해 현실성과 여성 인물의 주체성을 강화할 수 있음을 논의하였다. 그리고 이는 전래동화로 개작 시 삭제되었던 ‘결혼 후일담’에 담긴 의미와 일맥상통하는 것임도 함께 밝혔다. 이처럼 새로운 문화콘텐츠는 고전 원작에서 숨겨져 잘 드러나지 않았던 유의미한 장면을 발견‧복원하여 재평가하는 작업이 될 수도 있다. 셋째, 주요 인물에서 한 발짝 더 나아가 보조 인물이라 여겨졌던 인물에 주목하여 그들의 이야기를 끄집어내고 그들의 행동에 대해 반추해볼 필요성이 있음을 제안하였다. 계모형 가정 서사 속 아버지는 가족 내 갈등이 폭발하는 시기에는 방관자처럼 행동하다가 결말에 이르러 모든 고난을 이겨낸 친딸의 옆에서 행복을 같이 맛보는 인물이었다면, 오늘날 새로운 콘텐츠를 제작할 때에는 그의 공과(功過)에 대해 사람들이 토론할 수 있도록 좀 더 현실적이고 입체적인 인물로 부각해야한다는 것이다.
오늘날 우리 사회는 세대 갈등, 젠더 갈등, 지역 갈등 등이 심각한 문제로 대두되고 있다. 그 이유는 수없이 많겠지만 한편으로는 서로가 서로를 전형화해서 해석하고 오해하고 있는 것은 아닌지 생각해볼 필요가 있다. 문학에 등장하는 캐릭터가 전형성을 가진다는 것은 사회의 반영이겠으나, 역으로 결코 사회, 인간은 한 가지로 설명될 수 없고 모든 것이 전형화, 보편화로 설명될 수도 없다. 즉 문학 읽기, 문화콘텐츠 활용은 결국 많은 사람을 이해하는 작업으로 나아가야 한다. 고전 서사에 등장하는 전형화된 인물(캐릭터) 비틀기를 포함해서, 그간 주목하지 않았던 보조 인물까지 새로운 시각으로 바라볼 필요성이 있음을 주장하는 이유이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this article is to discuss the typical characteristics of the main characters appearing in classic literature, and to examine past examples of twisting the fixed images of such characters for new content development while inspecting its impact and possible lingering issues. There are many characters with typical personality traits in classic literature. This demonstrates an aggregation of typical and general traits of the individuals of a particular class or career that play a substantial role in the transfer of the story. In other words, while attempting to convey a particular topic, the emergence of a typical character with a universal narrative structure has the advantage of being easily remembered for a long time. This is the reason this structure is still widely used in various types of narrative literature.
The easiest way to elaborate on this topic is probably to present a story of the good protagonist (a child of the lawful wife) who appears in the Stepmother type family epic about the evil stepmother who harasses the protagonist. In Kongjwi and Patjwi and Janghwa Hongryeon Jeon, Kongjwi, Janghwa, and Hongryeon are framed and face the danger of death, yet they display the typical traits of good protagonists who ultimately find justice and live happily ever after. Furthermore, the antagonists the stepmother and her children, go against the protagonists, as typical characters who bully and frame the former wife's children, but ultimately, pay for their crimes.
The conflict between these key figures maintains the narrative interest and its stability. However, if the stereotype is successively followed, it may be experienced as a "typical person's typical story" and regarded as boring. When that happens, one way to break through is to switch the positions of the main character with that of the antagonist, or to reinterpret the behavior of the supporting character. Since the 2000s, many soap operas have tackled new issues and delivered hidden stories with new facets by putting forward the antagonists. Among them, I compared My Love Patjwi and Older Sister of Cinderella with Kongjwi and Patjwi as contrasting narratives in order to analyze the personality traits of "Patjwi" and the sister of "Cinderella" as they broke the stereotype of good protagonists. Moreover, I thoroughly observed the implications, significance, and limitations of this classic character twist to develop methods by which it can be utilized today.
First, by twisting the typical good and bad characters, various degrees of character comprehension can be achieved. Second, the realism and subjectivity of female characters can be enhanced through the dichotomy of male prince characters. In addition, it was revealed that the original story from folklore had been revised by deleting the "story after marriage" in order to change it to a folk story for children. Such new cultural content could contribute to finding and reevaluating meaningful moments obscured in classic original stories. Third, it might be suggested to focus not only on the main characters but on the supporting characters as well, in order to showcase their stories and reflect on their actions. If the father in the Stepmother type family epic involving the evil stepmother merely watched the conflicts explode in the family, yet enjoyed happiness with his daughter who overcame all hardship, he should be emphasized as a more realistic and dimensional character while developing the new content today in order to discuss his merits and demerits.
Today, our society is confronted with serious issues such as generational, gender, and regional conflicts, for which there are countless reasons. However, it is necessary to consider whether the characters misunderstand each other because they view each other through stereotypes. If the characters in literature were typical, the literature would not reflect society as such. The reverse is true: society and humanity can never be explained in only one way or described through stereotyping and typification. In other words, reading literature and utilizing cultural content should ultimately lead to understanding the varieties of people. This is the very reason why I focus on the need for a twist in typical characters found in classic stories, as well as the supporting characters that do not receive any spotlight, so that they can be viewed with a new perspective.
