중학교「사회 1」교과서 삽화의 기능 분석 (Analysis of Function of Illustrations in the Textbook of 「Society I」 in the Middle School)

초록

본 연구의 목적은 개정 교과서인 중학교 「사회 1」 교과서 삽화 자료의 기능과 기능적 속성에 대해 분석함으로써 교과서 삽화의 활용에 대한 시사점을 얻는 것이다. 무작위로 3곳 출판사의 교과서를 선택하여 사회문화 영역인 VII-VIII단원의 338개의 삽화 자료를 분석하였으며, 기능의 분석 기준은 장식, 동기, 표현, 설명, 조직, 파지 기능의 6가지로, 기능적 속성의 기준은 교과내용과의 관련성, 캡션과 지시, 배치 및 크기의 3가지로 선정하였으며, 이를 분류하여 p<.05 수준에서 통계 분석하였다.
연구 결과 및 시사점은 첫째, 사회과 교과서 삽화는 주로 ‘표현 기능’과 ‘설명 기능’을 하며, 기능에 따라 삽화 유형의 비중이 달라진다. 즉, 동기 기능은 그림, 표현 기능은 사진, 설명 기능은 사진과 그림, 조직 기능은 도표, 파지 기능은 그림이 주로 사용되며, 둘째, 학습 내용과의 관련성은 92.3%로 높은 편이나, 학습 내용과의 관련성을 전제로 교과서에 사용된다는 점에서 ‘보통’으로 분류된 26개의 삽화 모두 학습 내용과 관련성이 높은 내용으로 수정·보완이 필요하며, 셋째, 삽화의 71.3%만이 캡션과 지시가 제시되어, 보다 삽화에 대한 기본적인 정보를 제공하는 것이 반드시 필요하며, 넷째, 삽화의 93.0%가 적절하게 배치되었으나, 학습 내용과 삽화, 삽화와 캡션 등의 제시 순서가 바뀌어 학습의 효과가 감소되는 경우나 여러 개의 삽화를 겹쳐서 제시함으로써 학습 내용을 파악하기 어렵게 하는 경우가 있어 이에 대한 적절한 배치가 필요하며, 삽화의 크기 또한 80.9%가 적절하였으나, 19.1%는 크기나 모양이 적절하지 않아 이에 대한 수정이 필요하다. 교과서가 학교 교육에서 교재로서 선택이 아니라 필수라는 점을 감안할 때, 이러한 문제의 삽화는 교과서에서 최소한이 아니라 반드시 “zero”가 되어야 학습의 효율성을 높일 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the functional attributes as well as the functions of illustration in the Textbook of「 Society I」in the Middle School. To do so, textbooks from 3 random publishers were selected and a total of 338 illustrations in chapters VII-VIII were analyzed.
Now, to summarize the research results and the implications. First of all, illustrations mainly focus on the functions ‘representation’, and ‘explication’. Depending on the function, the type of the illustration diverts; to be more specific, ‘motivation’ is shown by drawings, ‘representation’ by pictures and drawings, ‘organization’ by diagrams, and ‘retention’ by drawings. Second, the relevance between the in-book illustrations and the learning contents are 92.3%, which is quite high, however, as the illustrations are used under the assumption that they are related with the learning material, the 26 illustrations that are marked as ‘average’ need to be modified·supplemented with content that have higher relevance with the material. Third, as only 71.3% of the illustrations have caption/label, the efficiency of illustrations may deteriorate. In future creation of in-book illustrations,captions and provision of basic information through directions are necessary. Fourth, although 93.0% of the illustrations were placed appropriately, there were cases where the efficiency of learning was reduced due to the abnormal order sequence between the learning material, illustration, and captions. We need to modify the placement of illustrations to clear these problems. Adding on, 80.9% of the illustrations had adequate size,however, the remaining 19.1% had improper size or shape which also needs modification.
These results show that the textbooks were improved compared to the 7th Social-Studies textbook, however, as textbooks are required, not optional, as teaching material in school education, illustrations that have these problems shouldn’t be left as minimized, but rather reduced to “zero” in order to strengthen the functionalities of illustrations and increase the efficiency of learning.
