북한사회의 합심(合心)주의 마음문화 (The Culture of Conheartism in North Korean Society)

초록

북한 사회는 ‘사회주의 현대성(socialist project of modernity)’을 경험한 사회임에도 불구하고 맑시즘의 합리성(과학성)과는 거리가 먼 일심단결(마음의 결합, 즉 합심 혹은 한 마음)을 강조하고 있다. 이 논문의 궁극적 관심은 북한 사람들의 심층에 내재해 있을 것으로 여겨지는 마음 문화의 존재 여부를 확인하고, 그 조응의 대상인 정치경제체제(혹은 사회주의체제) 사이의 관계를 규명함으로써 북한의 합심주의 마음문화를 분석하기 위한 유형론을 제안하려는 것이다. 이를 위해 북한식 사회주의 현대성의 전개와 북한사회에 내재하는 마음문화의 사상적 토대 및 사회적 맥락을 확인하고, ‘합심주의’라는 개념적 장치가 두 차원을 연결할 수 있는 매개개념임을 논증하고자 하였다.
본 연구에서는 1980년대 중반 북한사회의 합심 유형과 그 문화 지형 속에서 사회주의 현대성과 북한의 마음문화가 어떻게 결합하고 있는지를 「벗」과 「생명」이라는 소설의 내용분석을 통해 실증하였다. 「벗」과 「생명」은 이혼문제나 교육문제 등 일상적인 문제를 둘러싼 소시민들의 삶의 정서와 생각을 다루고 있고 그러한 점에서 북한사회의 마음문화(합심문화)를 풍부하게 내포하면서도, 사회의 세포로서 가정, 특히 노동자계급 가정의 중요성을 강조하고 있다든지 집단주의적 법치주의를 강조하는 점에서는 1980년대 중반 북한식 사회주의체제의 특성을 잘 반영하고 있기 때문이다.
이러한 과정을 거쳐서 본 연구는 오늘날 북한에도 합심주의적 마음문화가 매우 발달해 있으며, 사회주의체제와의 합심, 수령•당•조국과의 합심, 가족과의 합심, 자신의 본심(양심)과의 합심 등의 합심주의 유형을 확인할 수 있었다. 나아가 이러한 합심주의 마음문화가 당위론적 주장으로만 거론되던 ‘전통문화에 근거한 남북한 사회통합’의 구체적인 문화적 자원으로 활용될 수 있다는 실천적 함의를 포착했다는 점에서 기존의 통일 논의에도 일정한 기여를 했다고 평가할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 합심주의 마음문화는 북한사회를 이해하기 위한 분석틀로서도 유용성을 갖고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

영어초록

North Korean society emphasizes on the heart united, namely conheart or one grand heart, which seems rather away from the scientific approach of Marxism or possibly Marxist rationality, although it experiences a socialist project of modernity. The purpose of this paper is, first, to identify the background of social thought on the culture of heart(Maeum) and its historical flow as the first step of examining the relationship between the culture of heart(Maeum) rooted in the psychological depth of North Korean people and North Korean society, on the one had, and the political and economic system (or the socialist system) as its corresponding object, on the other. Second, this paper proposes a typology of analyzing the culture of conheartism in North Korea by way of demonstrating the fact that the conceptual device of ‘conheartism’ links, as a medium, the two parts mentioned above.
The study attempts to empirically prove how the socialist proejct of modernity in North Korea and its culture of heart(maeum), in the type of conheart in the 1980s and its cultural terrain, are connected with an approach in the content analysis of Norht Korean novels, 「Friend」 and 「Life」. These two deal with commoners’ sentiments of life and thinkings around ordinary lives with the issues of divorce and education. For this reason, these novels are said to plentifully involves the culture of conheartism in North Korean society and to reflect the characteristics of North Korean socialist system in the middle of 1980s in that the importance of workers family are pointed out and collective principle of legality are emphaszied.
With this paper the authors come to recognize the fact that the culture of conheartism is still very influential in North Korea today and to identify a series of type of conheartism, conheartism with the socialist system, conheartism with the state leader, the party and the nation, with family, with own conscience, and so forth. This research outcome could be positively evaluated in that the existing nominal argument on ‘the social integration of the South and the North based on traditional culture’ is supported by concrete cultural evidences. Additionally, the culture of conheartism is useful as a analytic framework for understanding North Korean society
