This paper discusses impacts of five-day workweek and expressways on tourism demand based on the analysis of relevant secondary data and literature. This paper also reviews existing tourism development plans for the regions where new expressways have been built.* Associate Professor, Dept. of Tourism Science, Hanyang University, Korea

The growth of tourism demand due to five-way work wouldn't be substantial. This is because potential tourists' budget for travel would be constrained and implementation of five-day workweek would be gradual. The nature of new expressway's impact on tourism demand is very complicated. Depending on tourist areas' locations and their resource characteristics, those impacts could be negative or positive. This implies that a new expressway could be an opportunity factor or a threatening factor.
However, the existing regional tourism plans that are reviewed in this study don't seem to reflect impacts of five-day workweek and expressway systematically. Some forecasts are too optimistic and some demand analyses are too general to provide helpful information for the development of specific strategies.
Several suggestions based on the analyses are made. Those include: 1) formulation of flexible plans to boost tourism industry; 2) formulation of monitoring system for tourism demand; and 3) development of new attractions to enhance tourist areas' competitiveness.
